Game Over
Stella got up from the couch slowly, her head pounding and her vision slightly blurry. She could feel blood running from her nose, but she knew she had to help her friend. She stood up and steadied herself, sneaking over to the kitchen to get a knife out of the block. She grabbed the biggest one there and started to make her way to the bedroom. "I just want you to answer one question before you do whatever it is you're going to do to me" Casey said to James in a low, wavering voice. "And what could you possibly need to know at this point in time?" James asked in a hissing tone, growing frustrated that she interrupted him. "I just want to know, how long have you been watching me? You seem to know a lot about my life." Casey couldn't believe she brought herself to ask this question, but she was hoping the police would show up in time.

The Old Man and the Crow
"I've got hyper-extensive voice", I blurt out. "You got what?" My bestie, John and I are walking down Boundary street, the sun has not long risen and its a rare moment of quietness in West End. Up ahead stands a solitary wheelie bin with white plastic bags erupting out. A lone crow lands on the green lid and begins to tear at the plastic with its beak.

Grandpa's Farm. Runner-Up in Return of the Night Owl Challenge.
THE DRIVE TO THE FARM was long, flat, and boring. Why Grandpa lived out there was anyone’s guess. He didn’t milk cows, grow crops, or raise animals. He didn’t even have a dog. Just barren fields, a dilapidated barn, and an old house with windows so thin that the frost in winter was thicker than the glass. Twelve-year-old Gavin couldn’t think of a worse place to spend Christmas. Sulking in the backseat of his mom’s old station wagon, he muttered under his breath just loud enough for her to hear.

The Cult Cafe
Cheyenne was always told not to go to that cafe. The cafe on Rose and 5th was supposedly owned and run by a cult. Of course, this was all a rumor. In reality, it's just run by vegans, so of course, the older people in town were scared. Cheyenne thought it was refreshing to see some modern ideals in her small town. Although, they were still a little too out there for her taste.

Book Review: "The Dominant Animal" by Kathryn Scanlan
I have read some pretty uncomfortable books in my time, including the infamous short story collection entitled "Haunted" by Chuck Palahniuk. I've read a lot of Stephen King, Peter Straub, Paul Tremblay and Shirley Jackson. Well, if you took Virginia Woolf's writing style, mixed it with the unease of Stephen King's tension narratives and then reduced the size to a short story and blended in some body horror and psychological distress a la Daphne Du Maurier, you're going to end up with this book by Kathryn Scanlan - "The Dominant Animals". A nod to the culture of the plain uncomfortable, this book is written in the most realist and ordinary of ways. Kind of like what would happen if Hemingway and Bret Easton Ellis made some kind of collaboration (but alas, Hemingway did not live that long). Here is a professional life tip for all of you: make sure you’re not eating anything whilst reading this book. You’re going to have a hard time keeping it in afterwards.

Interview
I never thought I’d end up here, never in a million years. I had always thought myself to be smart and rather careful. Clearly, I was wrong. A blanket draped around my shoulders, wearing a hoodie and sweatpants that were loaned to me, shoes from the lost and found box, waiting for a detective to finally come take my statement. I’ve pinched myself so many times trying to keep myself awake, and as a reminder that I’m not dreaming.

Martin's Dream Date
Athena was looking at her emails to see if she had heard anything back from user name: Handsome Man 2020 and so far there was nothing. She wondered if she would hear from him. She thought back to their chat on the LookingforLove website, and how he sounded like the perfect man for her. His pictures didn't look too bad either. They had been chatting for a couple of months; and the more they chatted, the more she wanted to meet this almost too good to be true man.

New Friend?
It was the summer of 1969. My family had moved into a townhouse in Anne Arundel County in Maryland. It was in a new housing development. The other houses in the tract looked pretty much the same. They most likely resembled a colonial home, as per the imagination of the developer if attempting to imitate earlier times. There were woods in back, that had not been touched as yet. But I figured their time would eventually come, in order to make room for more housing developments.
