The Fast and the Furious Turns 25: The Wild Origins of a $7.5 Billion Franchise
1. One Magazine Article Created a Franchise In 1998, a freelance journalist followed a street racer through the back roads of New York City—and accidentally sparked one of the most successful film franchises in history. Kenneth Li’s Vibe article, “Racer X,” profiled Dominican drag racer Raphael Estévez, who tore through New York streets in a black Nissan 300ZX with no speedometer, believing that if you don’t know how fast you’re going, you won’t slow down. That philosophy and attitude became the backbone of Dominic Toretto’s character. A Universal executive read the article, sensed potential, and pushed it toward development.

What Happened to 90 Minute Films?
It feels like every movie these days stretches to the past two hour mark. Take two movies I’m planning on seeing this month: Marvel’s Spider-man: Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The first comes in around 2 hours and 30 minutes, the second a staggering 2 hours and 52 minutes – just barely under three whole hours.

What Movies Have I Been Watching?
"Without a Paddle" (2004), Director: Steven Brill, Actors: Matthew Lillard, Seth Green, and Dax Shepherd In my movie hunting, I have seen the “Without a Paddle” poster but never sat down to watch it. One night, I did. It’s one of those comedies that packs in all the humor it can. However, it’s a genuine ‘bro film.’ Matthew Lillard, Seth Green, and Dax Shepherd made a believable friendship. Their characters survive in the wild and adulthood. I have found more films about growing up in adulthood lately. We’re still finding ourselves. The story loses its focus in the climax, adding scenes that felt like filler. It’s worth checking out and having a laugh with friends.
