A Filmmaker's Guide to: Michael Douglas
In this chapter of ‘the filmmaker’s guide’ we’re actually going to be learning about literature and film together. I understand that many of you are sitting in university during difficult times and finding it increasingly hard to study and I understand that many of you who are not at university or not planning on it are possibly stuck of what to do, need a break or even need to catch up on learning film before you get to the next level. This guide will be brief but will also contain: new vocabulary, concepts and theories, films to watch and we will be exploring something taboo until now in the ‘filmmaker’s guide’ - academia (abyss opens). Each article will explore a different concept of film, philosophy, literature or bibliography/filmography etc. in order to give you something new to learn each time we see each other. You can use some of the words amongst family and friends to sound clever or you can get back to me (email in bio) and tell me how you’re doing. So, strap in and prepare for the filmmaker’s guide to film studies because it is going to be one wild ride.
Annie KapurPublished 3 years ago in GeeksBook Review: "The Wake" by Vikki Patis
Thrillers are some of my favourite books to sit there and read for hours on end. They contain engrossing stories with many twists and turns, mixed up identities and strange happenings that would cause the nature of families and friendships within the novels to collapse. I love reading about these secrets that people keep from each other that only come out when they are forced out, found out or happen in a mysterious way to be pulled out during a tense moment. I have to say, this book contains all the logic and tension of the thriller that you love but then, there is a lot more to it than that. There is so much more to the book than that. It is written brilliantly and in a style that is consistent with multiple perspectives. It is an incredible work.
Annie KapurPublished 3 years ago in GeeksReview: The Queen's Gambit
I use to play chess in elementary school like really played it. I was in a competitive chess club, and as far as I knew I could bet just about anyone. However, over the years I played less, and overall I am a terrible chess player now. I still love to play, whenever I get the chance of course. This brings me to the show “The Queen’s Gambit”. While I had lost nearly all the knowledge I had possessed in the realm of chess, this show definitely went overboard and taught us all a bit of something about that board.
Tales From The Void
Gabriela set about really going through the things she had taken from the snake creature that had attacked her. Most of the trinkets were silver or gold cups, some jewelry, and scant amount of coins. There was however a bracer that caught her eye. It was high tech with a readout display that popped up when you tapped it. “This could definitely come in handy.”

If you’re like me, then you have a hard time getting into those trendy binge watch shows like The Office, Game of Thrones, or Stranger Things while they’re trendy. Naturally, there’s a lot more shows than these that are trendy, but that’s what comes to mind. I only watch shows that I’ve already had a long running loyalty to (Supernatural), re-watch for background noise, or are somewhat compelling. I find a lot of the detective, action, and crime shows interesting. I don’t mean the horror porn that some find appealing, but prison documentaries or law and order type shows.
The Ring of Fire
It is the 20th April 2021. Tom Hanks, for it is he, is sitting at his typewriter composing a Pulitzer Prize winning treatise on the meaning of symbols on typewriter keyboards. The stack of completed pages sits on his fine wooden desk, taller only than his bouffant hair which has not been cut in two months due to social distancing measures. Suddenly the telephone on Tom Hanks’ desk rings ominously. He lifts the receiver with the feeling that this call will be anything but ordinary, and is greeted by a mysterious voice in an accent that he cannot quite place. ‘Is this... Tom Hanks,’ the voice asks, seeming both near and far away at the same time. “Mister Hanks - Do you know of Dante’s ‘Ring of Fire’?”

I just had to watch Less Is Now because I am obsessed with The Minimalists. They have changed my life in so many ways from reading their blog to listening to that podcast. I just knew that the minute this documentary was out I had to watch it.
Movie Review: 'Tyger Tyger'
The new movie Tyger Tyger suffers from the strange affliction of having a far more interesting backstory than the story being told in the movie. The film was written and directed by Kerry Mondragon and explores his own troubled history with drug abuse to tell a story about the often surreal, beautiful and dangerous world of addiction. The film is set inside a real life fringe community in California that proves to be way more interesting than the story of the movie.
Sean PatrickPublished 3 years ago in GeeksWhy Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon has me losing my mind
There's no denying that Disney has played a huge role in shaping or influencing our childhoods, especially their animated movies. As a kid I would watch all the Disney Princess movies with an almost obsessive intensity. I'm still very confident in being able to sing the theme songs from each movie (even though I am admittedly very tone deaf). If I had to name my favourite movies, it would have to 'Aladdin'. The original animated movie, has a very special place in my heart because of Princess Jasmine.
Shinissa KaurPublished 3 years ago in GeeksYou've Got Mail fans will love this new show
Looking through your Queue can be exhausting, and its not always super accurate. So how do you find what to watch next? I love romantic comedies, and honestly, 90's era romcoms are some of my all-time favorites. Meg Ryan definitely gave us quite a few classics like Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally and Kate and Leopold. But my favorite of hers will always be You've Got Mail.

Brittany BrownPublished 3 years ago in GeeksMovie Review: 'Safer at Home'
Safer at Home is a thriller set in what hopefully will remain an alternate reality. In Safer at Home, it’s 2023 and Americans are under a brand new and even more severe COVID lockdown. We are told that the police and military are in the streets enforcing curfews in major cities and that the death toll has increased severely as new strains of the Coronavirus find new purchase across the country.
