Tortellini Bake by Amanda Payne

Tortellini Bake is a mix of ground meat, spices, three-cheese tortellini, and red sauce. Oh, and let’s not forget the cheesy goodness.

I'd like to repeat what my oldest son, Chase, said about this recipe, but I'm a lady and try to not talk like that, so I'll have to edit the bad words with bleeps.

That's the best bleeping bleep ever! You need to bleeping fix this bleep more often! At least once a week. Ummm, bleep! That's good!

So, now that you know what he said about it, you should know it's good because he almost never comments on anything I cook for dinner.

Tortellini Bake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of ground meat (beef, chicken, turkey, venison, etc...)
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 12 ounces of frozen three-cheese tortellini
  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon of dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon of dried celery flakes
  • 24 ounces of traditional spaghetti sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Getting It Done:

  1. Put the ground meat and 1/2 cup of water in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Mix the water into the burger well and continue to stir and break up the meat as it fries. You want the meat mixture to turn out nice and smooth.
  2. Once the ground meat is halfway done, add the oregano, basil, and celery flakes. Continue cooking until the meat is done.
  3. Add the spaghetti sauce and let it simmer for another minute and then remove it from the heat.
  4. Prepare the tortellini according to the package directions.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  6. When the tortellini is done, drain the water and gently spoon half of it evenly into a 9″ x 13″ casserole dish.
  7. Top it with the meat sauce mixture, then another layer of tortellini, and then a final layer of the meat sauce mixture.
  8. Add mozzarella cheese to the top. Bake for about 5 minutes, just long enough for the cheese to melt.
  9. Remove from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, and serve.

Let's eat!

I used ground venison for this recipe, but you can use any ground meat you prefer. It is good with ground beef, chicken, and turkey as well. You can also leave the meat out for a meatless dinner.

This is a meal in itself, but it goes great with a salad and garlic bread. It is good as leftovers too, so if you have any leftovers this would be great for lunch the next day.

To reheat, place the leftovers on the countertop for an hour. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Cut the Tortellini Bake into squares. This will allow the center to heat more efficiently without overcooking the edges. Cover the dish with aluminum foil. Reheat for about 20 minutes or until heated well. The temperature in the middle should be at least 165°F.

You can use the microwave as well. Heat each serving individually for 40 seconds at a time until warm. You might need to stir after every heating. This will mess the cheese topping up, but it will still be very tasty.

I hope you enjoy the recipe!
