Summer Sweets
When I was growing up you could tell what part of Summer it was based on what dessert we were making. Smores were an obvious all summer option, but I'm particular how I make mine. Strawberry shortcake was a strong July staple. Then to finish it off we would have Mexican Wedding Cake in August because it was my favorite and my birthday was the only tiime of year that I could get my grandma to make it for me. Let me explain each of these desserts. I may not be a picky eater but I am particular about how I like the classics.

An English Picnic
Growing up, an English summer was not complete without a picnic. Every child looked forward to their school holidays, but the summer break was particularly magical…six weeks of fun, sunshine and outings. I know England is universally joked about for wet weather; but my childhood memories of summer include sunny days and long evenings sitting in the garden until 10pm, when darkness finally laid its blanket over us. I remember day trips to the beach with buckets and spades, plastic flags, donkey rides and ice creams. Then driving home sandy, salty, tired and happy. Castle explorations and rambling in the woods hunting for blackberries also feature in my memories. Another popular pastime was water fights with old washing up liquid bottles with the neighbourhood children; there was usually some incident where detergent hadn’t been totally removed and ended up in someone’s eye, but they were fun times, filled with simple pleasures.

Killing Me Softly with an Elephant Ear
The heat was blinding, and somehow it amplified the sounds of the rides that were slicing through the air, as well as the screaming voices of carnival-goers that chose rides that terrified and excited them. My brother and sister were already pointing to the attractions that they wanted to go to first once we received our ride bracelets, but for me, I was following my nose instead.

Fiddler with a stick
A fiddler with a stick... Sounds crazy, no? But here, in the middle of the Georgia wilderness, you might say everyone in my family is a fiddler with a stick, trying to scratch the tip of our sticks against rocks to make them sharp without breaking them. It isn't easy. You may ask, "why do we bother with sticks when Walmart sells sharp metal rods for only five bucks?" Well, we go out into the woods because it isn't our home. And how do we manage to make amazing s'mores without fancy tools? That I can tell you in one word! Tradition!

The King of Summer
I refuse to believe anyone living in Mumbai can genuinely, truly love summer. Beaches, ice creams and barbecues are more of a December/January thing in a city where the coldest it gets is 18 degrees Celsius, if we're lucky. Summer mostly consists of sweating as soon as you step out of the shower, struggling to put on any clothes over your body as the muggy air clings to every pore of your skin, nearly crying if you need to step out of the sweet embrace of your air conditioner because no piece of clothing you own is small enough or thin enough for the vicious humidity and the unimaginable heat that makes you feel light-headed as soon as it hits you. Before I completely put you off of ever visiting Mumbai though, let me tell you the reason summer is still my favourite season; mangoes.

Summer Sweet Corn
Summertime favorites abound! Some like juicy watermelon, others hot dogs seared on the grill. Still others, it's that camping favorite, the s'more. All good choices, sure. All very reminiscent of the hot summer months.

Elephant Ears are Summer
Hot sunny days walking along the riverwalk are some of the best days of Summer. I get to breathe in clarity and breathe out uncertainty. Summer is family reunions, barbecues, weddings, and graduations. It is the season my brown skin becomes more richly dressed in brown even when I use my sunscreen. It is the voices of friends conversing “I can’t wait to see you.” “Let’s go to the pool.” “How bout Playa del Carmen instead of Cancun?” “I think I’ll just sit on the porch and apricate all morning.” Summer is the best time to grill, find the freshest fruit, and eat multiple servings of ice cream all day long. I can sip lemonade and read a book or simply do nothing. When I think of summer, I think of quality time sitting around eating and laughing with family and friends. The emphasis is on the eating my dear friend, ‘wink’.
