A Pandemic Story
In November Ella decided to dress-down for her visit to the food bank. Last time, when she pulled up in her electric blue Volvo XC90 on a good hair day, in full make-up, she got more than a few side-eyes. Her hope was that they all thought she was picking up food as charity for an elderly neighbor. But that wasn’t the case. She halfway hoped that she wouldn’t qualify when they had her fill out the form that first visit. She even called her husband to confirm the numbers, so that a portion of the all-consuming shame she felt could be lifted from her shoulders. She was shocked at the tears that ran down her cheeks when she realized that not only did they qualify to receive food, they qualified at one of the lowest levels, which meant that her family was getting more food than the family next to her with the broken down 1999 Toyota Corolla. The relief of qualifying so that she could bring home food for her family, was quickly overshadowed with even more shame and disappointment. Thankfully, the volunteers at the food bank didn’t bat an eye; didn’t miss a step; didn’t give one single indication that she shouldn’t be there. They were gracious, kind and generous; even offering jokes and getting her to laugh a little. When the back of the Volvo was full to the brim with boxes of donated fruits, vegetables, meats, breads and goodies, the volunteers reminded her that she could come back no sooner than 30 days. They marked the date on her receipt. Then she backed out of the parking lot and started on her way home; a home she hoped she could keep.

Watch Out, It's Pumpkin Slice Season
It’s that time of year again. The leaves are changing, the mornings are getting chilly, the Halloween décor is all on display at every store you go to “just to look” but leave with $50 worth of merchandise because DUH, spooky vibes. But the one thing more important if not the most important, the quintessential fall staple that oversaturates food, drinks, decorations, clothing, your emails, your thoughts. And we salivate for it, we yearn for it, we fantasize about the moment we can get our hands on it and monstrously devour it, much like a vampire on a bag of blood after being asleep for 1200 years. It is our life force during the cooler months; we cannot stop ourselves. We crave it, we need it, we obsess over it. None of us are immune to its intoxicating power, its symbolism, its deliciousness, its magic. We need to feed, we MUST feed. What am I talking about? Pumpkin, of course. But you already knew that. Pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin beer; even pumpkin Cheerios. A pumpkin explosion that we so desperately have been lusting for ever since we see a package of orange string lights for sale in late July at the back of Target, gingerly teasing us as to what is to come.

Fall Family Favorites
My family and I love fall; the colorful leaves, the crisp air, bonfires, flannel jackets, ciders, and harvest time. I personally love fall for another reason; cooking, baking, and creating delicious treats in our bright orange kitchen. If our kitchen were to identify with a season, it would undoubtedly be autumn. While our kitchen layout may not be the easiest to navigate, I don't regret our paint color choice or the woodland paintings donned by our walls. When we take our dogs for a walk to the end of our driveway each night, a comforting, warm, glow illuminates our home from the solitary light we leave on in the kitchen just like a candle of old. This appreciation inspires several culinary creations that feel like family and home.

It Is Apple Picking Season And That Means Apple Pie!
Both women had a profound effect on many people. They both opened their homes and kitchens to anyone in need. Mom collected many recipes over the years, many written on whatever scrap paper she could find. Many of us have fond memories of the time spent with her and the many meals and desserts (especially desserts) that were shared with others in her kitchen.
