England

Quiche Provencale is a wonderful quiche prepared with zucchini, tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers. The vegetables are combined with eggs, cheese, and seasonings. The ingredients are poured into a pastry shell and baked until golden brown.

Tarte a l’oignon is a savory onion tart originating from the Alsace region. This is an open-faced pie that includes a flavorful custard made of eggs, bacon, and onions with a dough base.

Germany

Zwiebelkuchen translates to onion cake or savory onion pie. The dish is prepared with a buttery crust made with yeasted dough. The pie is filled with caramelized onions, smoky bacon, and a creamy mixture of eggs and sour cream. The pie is flavored with salt, pepper, and caraway seeds.

Bulgaria

Patatnik comes from the Rhodope Mountain region. This dish includes shredded potatoes and onions and is flavored with salt, pepper, and mint. Other ingredients added are sirene cheese, eggs, and various peppers. The pie is baked in an oven but can be fried or boiled.

Croatia

Soparnik is a simple pie originating in the Poljica region in Dalmatia. The dough is made with flour, salt, and water. The filling consists of chard and red onions between two sheets of thinly rolled dough.

Alevropita is a crispy pie originating in Epirus. The dough is made with wheat flour, milk or yogurt, and eggs. A thin batter is sprinkled with feta cheese and herbs can be included. It is baked in a large round pan, drizzled with olive oil. This pie is eaten for breakfast or as a snack.

Kreatopita is a traditional Greek pie. It includes flaky phyllo dough that is filled with ground beef, rice, leeks, cheese, bechamel sauce, and seasonings. It is baked until golden.

Italy

Erbazzone is a savory pie that originated in the Reggio Emilia province. The filling is a combination of greens like spinach, chard, leeks, or various herbs. The filling is placed between two layers of lard-based dough. Before baking pancetta, Parmigiano Reggiano, ham, and garlic are added to the filling. The pie is eaten as an appetizer or as a snack.

Empanada Gallega is a traditional Galician-style empanada in the form of a large pie. The top and bottom crusts are made with leavened dough. The filling can include tuna or other types of seafood, meat or chorizo, or vegetables. Other ingredients include onions, peppers, and tomatoes.

Bacon and egg pie is a pie made with flaky pastry and filled with hard-boiled eggs and salty bacon. It is a favorite at picnics.

It is flavored with parsley, basil, and oregano and then baked in the oven until the cheese melts.

South America

Pastel de carne is prepared with ground meat, and hard-boiled eggs in a pastry shell. The ingredients are topped with cheese and mashed potatoes. Then baked until the cheese melts.

Chile

Pastel de Choclo is a casserole-like pie. The filling consists of ground beef, chicken, black olives, onions, and hard-boiled eggs in a corn flour dough known as choclo.
