Bacon butty is a sandwich that is made with slices of white bread or a bread roll that is spread with butter. The bread is filled with lots of bacon and a brown sauce, ketchup, or an egg can be added.

Ireland

The Irish breakfast roll is a well-rounded breakfast sandwich. It is filled with ingredients that are usually part of a traditional Irish breakfast. The sandwich is filled with eggs, bacon, sausages, black pudding, tomatoes, mushrooms, and brown sauce. It can also include other ingredients as well.

Belgium

Mitraillette is a sandwich that originated in either Brussels or Wallonia. The sandwich is prepared with a long baguette filled with fried meat, French fries, and a sauce like bearnaise, garlic, mayonnaise, or ketchup. The sandwich can include carrots, cabbage, caramelized onions, lettuce, and tomatoes.

Germany

Fischbrotchen is a sandwich that originated in Northern Germany. It consists of round or elongated bread buns topped with fish like herring, sprats, salmon, or mackerel and topped with pickles, remoulade, onions, lettuce, and horseradish.

Italy

Lampredotto originated in Florence and is a favorite street food. It is prepared with cow stomach boiled until tender in an aromatic onion, celery, and tomato broth. This hearty stew is served on bread rolls steaming hot and topped with Italian salsa verde herb sauce.

Spain

Bocadillo de lomo is a sandwich that consists of a baguette with both sides of the bread rubbed with ripe tomato halves and garlic cloves. It is filled with pork tenderloin, cheese, tomatoes, peppers, and onions. It can include slices of Spanish tortilla (potato omelet).

Bocadillo de atun is a sandwich prepared with a baguette. The baguette is sliced down the middle and filled with a lot of canned tuna in oil. Other ingredients include tomatoes, olives, onions, cheese, strips of fire-roasted piquillo peppers, hard-boiled eggs, anchovies, and aioli (garlic and mayonnaise sauce).

Vietnam

Banh mi thit is a traditional sandwich made with different cold cuts. The sandwich is made with a banh mi roll filled with sliced roasted pork, sliced pork belly, cha (sliced ham) or cha lua (pork sausage), cucumbers, pickled carrots, daikon, liver pate, and mayonnaise. It is garnished with coriander, black pepper, and slice chili peppers.

Israel

Sabich is a sandwich that consists of ingredients placed into pita bread. Pita bread is stuffed with fried eggplants, hard-boiled eggs, tahini sauce, Israeli salad, hummus, pickles mango sauce, and parsley.

Tunisia

Fricassee is a traditional sandwich. It has a base made with flour, eggs, oil, salt, water, and yeast. It is baked and shaped into round or elongated rolls then fried in hot oil. The rolls are filled with tuna, hummus, boiled eggs, capers, olives, harissa (hot chili pepper paste), and boiled potatoes.

North America

The US

The Italian sandwich originated in America. It consists of a long bread roll. The roll is stuffed with cheese, meats such as salami, mortadella, ham, and tomatoes, olives, pickles, and onions.

Muffuletta is a traditional sandwich that originated in New Orleans, Louisiana. A loaf of bread is split and stuffed with salami, ham, mortadella, cheese, and olive salad which is a mixture of olives, capers, shallots, pepperoncini, and giardiniera, an Italian relish with pickled vegetables.

Also from New Orleans, the Po’boy is a unique sandwich. French bread is filled with meat like roast beef, meatballs, or ham. It can also be filled with shrimp, crab, and oysters.

A breakfast sandwich refers to any kind of sandwich eaten for breakfast. It includes bread rolls topped with cured meats, eggs, cheese, as well as bacon.

New England

Grinder is a variety of submarine sandwiches. An Italian bread roll is filled with olive oil, sliced ham, turkey, salami, prosciutto, provolone cheese, tomatoes, and lettuce. It is dressed with vinegar, oregano, salt, and pepper.

Maine

Lobster rolls are a Maine specialty. The sandwich consists of cooked lobster meat drizzled with melted butter and placed on long hot dog rolls. Other ingredients include lettuce, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper.

Illinois

The Maxwell Street Polish sandwich is a popular street food in Chicago. It consists of a hot dog bun filled with grilled or fried Polish sausage, grilled onions, yellow mustard and can include pickled green sports peppers.

Italian beef is a sandwich originating in Chicago. It consists of an Italian-style roll topped with thinly sliced, seasoned roast beef, pickled giardiniera relish or roasted green bell peppers. Mozzarella or cheddar cheese can be added.

Hoagie sandwiches originated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They consist of Italian rolls sprinkled with oil and vinegar. They are topped with onions, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, provolone cheese, and various meats. They are flavored with oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.

Canada

Montreal Smoked Meat is a sandwich prepared with prime beef brisket that has been marinated in herbs and spices for at least ten days. After that the meat is smoked and hand-sliced. It is place on rye bread and accompanied by French fries, pickles, coleslaw, mustard, peppers, and olives.

Mexico

Pambazo is the name of the bread and the sandwich made from this bread. The bread is dipped in a spicy, pepper-onion-garlic sauce called guajillo. It is filled with potatoes, refried beans, avocado slices, chicken, chorizo sausage, and cheese.

Cemita is a popular sandwich that originated in Pueblo. It consists of a fresh, sesame-seed sprinkled bun filled with breaded and fried cutlets of meat like pork, beef, or chicken, shredded cheese, avocado slices, pickled jalapenos, amd papalo (an herb with a unique flavor). This sandwich can include tomatoes, lettuce, and mayonnaise.

Tripleta is a popular sandwich that incorporates three kinds of meat. The sandwich is made with a fresh loaf of bread topped with grilled steak, lechon pork, ham, cheese, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, fried, ketchup, and mayonnaise.

Argentina

Sanguche de Milanesa consists of a split baguette that is filled with Milanese (breaded beef cutlet), mayonnaise, tomatoes, onions, and shredded lettuce. This sandwich can also include chimichurri sauce, ham, cheese, and mustard.

Sandwich de Lomo consists of a long bread roll that is topped with thinly sliced lomo steak, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, ham, cheese, mayonnaise, chimichurri sauce, and a fried egg,

Chile

Chacarero is a popular sandwich. It is made with a fresh bread roll filled with slices of strip steak, green beans, tomatoes, and hot chili peppers.

Brazil

Bauru is a sandwich prepared with a crusty bread roll. The bread roll is filled with roast beef, melted cheese, tomatoes, and sliced pickles.
