Coffee houses in San Francisco can be a dime a dozen.

Seriously, you'll find about 300 espresso shops throughout the city - that's about 6 per square mile!

Why are there so many? SF is the international leader of the Third Wave progressive espresso movement, a movement that aims to provide high quality coffee as an artisan commodity such as craft beer or wine.

This is great news for us, as the people of San Francisco love their espresso. We've narrowed down our checklist to the very best and then the most effective to bring you this list of espresso retailers you should go to before you die.

Coffee house Réveille/Café Réveille

Réveille Espresso began in 2010 when brothers Thomas and Christopher Newbery started selling espresso from a converted truck. Many years later, and across four locations, Réveille offers some of the tastiest espresso and espresso drinks in San Francisco. Right after moving to Mission Bay just 6 months ago, Cafe Réveille is currently making a ton of buzz on Yelp and social media. Bright colors combined with modest, artsy décor make Cafe Réveille a great place to grab a coffee, have breakfast/lunch or spend some time telecommuting. (Note: Cafe Réveille is also open for dinner and drinks every evening.) All the beans are roasted on site, and their mocha is probably the most favorite dish on the menu. Réveille Espresso has other locations in Jackson Square, Castro, and the North Shore.

Cafe Réveille (Mission Bay) - 610 Extended Bridge Street, San Francisco, California.

Investment company Golden Bear

Right down the street from UC San Francisco's Parnassus Health Center, Heart is the company that buys and sells Golden Bear. This unassuming café sells breakfasts, spirits, and coffee snob drinks. This tiny cafe is generally a must for coffee lovers in the city and has been featured in Yelp's "Top 100 Places to Consume". Sam, the passionate owner of Golden Bear, is believed to have said that if you don't think his coffee is truly the best, he will provide you with an extra cup without spending a dime. Issue acknowledged, Sam!

Endytown Espresso Roasters

On quiet Lawton Avenue in Outer Sunset is Andytown Coffee Roasters, famous for its Snowy Plover iced espresso. It's a blend of iced espresso, sparkling water and brown sugar syrup topped with delicious homemade whipped cream that gives Neat Whip a head start in revenue. This drink is just one of the reasons for your intense stress, which usually flies out the door. (That, plus the proven fact that Andytown packs a coffee shop, roaster and bakery in its 600-square-foot store!) Don't miss out on Northern Irish soda bread and buns. Added bonus: it's only a few blocks from Ocean Beach.

Organization of coffee roasting Graffeo

Founded in 1935, Graffeo Coffee Roasting Corporation is one of the oldest coffee roasting companies in North America. You'll discover Graffeo just down the road from Washington Square Park from the coronal heart of North Beach, San Francisco's famous Italian grotto. Graffeo is not exactly a cafe; it really is a roaster. You can only purchase their delicious roasted beans or grounds. Totally worth it.

papa november

Papa November may forever be an espresso van on the corner of 15th Road and Kansas in the San Francisco Layout District, all the way across the street through Layout Heart and Style Nearby. Even though there is no seating, the espresso usually makes up for it. Serving coffee in Stumptown, the truck changes beans every week. In addition, they sell homemade cakes that change from day to day. What to buy in Papa November? The Claris - cold milk cream with espresso. Of course, Papa November's coffee truck is full, so grab a cup to go with your strategy to an office environment or get ready for a work day of furniture inspection.

Ritual espresso roasters

Ritual Coffee Roasters sparked an espresso renaissance in San Francisco after opening in 2005. Ritual, away from The Mission, has expanded to include four locations, including Flora Grubb Gardens in Bayview and Oxbow Public Marketplace in Napa. Our favorite would be the PROXY outpost in Hayes Valley, a modified shipping container that looks very hipster. Get caffeinated with their delicious Gibraltar Espresso, San Francisco edition of Cortado, and go beyond Chantal Guillon for a sweet pairing.

Ritual Espresso at PROXY - 432b Octavia Street, San Francisco, California

Filz Espresso

No list of San Francisco coffee shops would be complete without a Philz espresso. Erase it. San Francisco wouldn't be all-inclusive without Phils! Phil Jaber was the owner of a mini-supermarket in the Mission area and needed to pass on a larger inheritance to his son Jacob. In his quest to create the best espresso, it took seven years to get his first espresso blend, Tesoro, just right. Phils is truly a San Francisco staple with fourteen locations in the city and 15 others throughout Bay Spot. (Philz has also expanded to La, and his eyes are set on Washington, D.C.—we'd say he'll be leaving behind the lines with more legacies.) Mint iced espresso mojito has become the go-to item when paired with Mocha Tesora—however, you really You can't go wrong with any of the things listed here.

Housing

Located close to 19th Avenue and Noriega, this stylish modern coffee shop is known for its communal tables, comfortable environment and variety of espresso creations. Well known among students and hipsters, the menu is written on giant sheets of paper on the wall. What do you need to buy at the Residence? Without a doubt: lavender latte. If lavender isn't your thing (or you're afraid your espresso will taste like soap - a serious concern, even though it's delicious), try sea salt caramel and coconut vanilla espresso.

Mill

The mill will look like the brainchild of Four Barrel Espresso and Josey Baker Bread in the busy Divisadero Road corridor between NoPa and Alamo Sq. specials) baked by Josey Baker Bread, pastries from Neighbor Bakehouse, cookies from Anthony's and donuts from Dynamo Donuts. If your taste buds haven't exploded yet when you're dreaming of the taste that the Mill certainly is, get ready for it: The Mill hosts Pizza Night every Monday from 18:00 to 21:00, and Mondays are Grilled Cheese and Soup Night. . Wednesday, from 18:00 to 21:00. Seriously, is this place a sci-fi paradise? Yes yes it is. We recommend ordering an espresso drink with a Croissant with pistachios and blackberries.

Mill - 736 Divisadero Road, San Francisco, California

Blue coffee bottle

An extra original of the Bay Area (Auckland to be exact), you can never go wrong with Blue Bottle Coffee. With unique locations around the world (the Blue Bottle store recently opened in Tokyo), espresso lovers from all over the world flock to Blue Bottle for delicious handcrafted drinks, especially their famous iced coffee drinks: New Orleans Iced Coffee with chicory flavor and creamy Vietnamese Iced Espresso. Our favorite Blue Bottle outpost is without a doubt the semi-hidden Linden Alley store in Hayes Valley, which operates outside of a garage and is surrounded by graffiti. Great pit stop before or after a day of shopping Hayes Valley many boutiques.

Cafe Fog Lifter

Fog Lifter Cafe is a truly humble, quirky coffee shop located in the heart of Ingleside. Common to locals and SFSU and CCSF students, this casual establishment serves delicious coffee, Blue Bottle and Sightglass roasts, as well as smoothies, pastries, breakfast scrambles, panini sandwiches and more. This shop specializes in pour over espresso.

Troubled coffee firm

Trouble Espresso Co. will be the little coffee shop that can do it. From its original location, located outside a tiny store in the far reaches of the Outer Sunset, Trouble Espresso sparked a San Francisco handmade toast craze with $4 cinnamon sugar toast on thick bread. (Hey, the name is just starting to make sense to us—because you're going to have trouble eating their bread—in terms of calories and maybe financial too.) Launched by Juliet Carrelli, Trouble has expanded its small coffee shop (and coconut club) achievements with two new locations in Bayview and Oakland - combined with toast offerings.

Trouble Espresso Co. and Coconut Club - 4033 Judah Avenue, San Francisco, California

Saint Frank Espresso

This trendy hipster cafe is located on top Polk Avenue in Russian Hill. With high ceilings, abundant natural light, clean lines and a minimalist white and oak interior, the Saint Frank Hotel will make you feel like you've been transported to Copenhagen. As you might have guessed, Saint-Franc is named after our beloved city. The menu is compact and the coffee is lighter (in true Scandinavian form). Our favorite creation at Saint Frank is the Macadamia Almond Latte.

Coffee house Picchino

Piccino is typically a modern Italian trattoria with a charming coffee bar. This tiny espresso bar serves Sightless coffee, hot oven buns, and other homemade pastries you're sure to love. Open until 10pm, it really is the perfect stop shortly after eating at Dogpatch for any cappuccino. Even though the espresso bar has no seating, you can find a bench in the pleasant Woods Yard park above the street.

Espresso bar

Between the Mission District and Potrero Hill is the Espresso Bar, one of our favorite places in San Francisco. This cozy yet modern coffee shop features a two-level shop with sidewalk and courtyard seating serving coffees and espressos made by Mr. Espresso. This unique place offers breakfast and lunch items including sandwiches, salads and, of course, sweets. Come to this cozy coffee shop to taste their Havana Latte - YUM!
