Excerpt 2: Beneath The Mushroom Cap
6am 8th December 2016 The morning comes, and we awake to an atypical continental. There is dragon fruit, watermelon, and a specification Laden omelette. Something which seems a little over the top, until they make you exactly what you asked, and it envelops me. That in this culture what you ask for, you get. In Britain I guess the best we have is to ask for an omelette and see what arrives, so much so that even the choice of variability in Britain constitutes as a favour and not within the rights of service.

The Grand Canyon
My sister and I always wanted to travel growing up, but coming from a lower class family and becoming teenage mothers, we’ve never gotten the opportunity. She always said that she wanted to see the Grand Canyon but surprisingly that was never on my list. I wanted to see what was outside of our borders. I never wanted to stay in it much less see more of it. I’m 27 now and my sister died six years ago. I’ve never been quite the same mentally or emotionally but now I take care of her children and mine, gratefully. I’ve believed since then that I needed to somehow live and experience for the both of us, even buying those gross chocolate covered cherries she loved to somehow keep her alive. It’s like I think that buying stuff she loved would somehow keep her spirit around, knowing I don’t really believe in things like that. Which almost makes me mad at her for making me buy this god awful candy.

Thank you! Big Sister Hannah!
Thank you, Big Sister Hannah! Was it yesterday? During dinner, my seven-year-old niece, Jessica cast a question to me. At first, I didn't understand what she was talking about. Because it was not a question to ask at that young age, it was a difficult question at that age to make a sentence that would make sense.

The Boy Who said Goodbye
Who did the mess? 'Why did you put all the clothes on the floor?' Screeched mum with utter frustration. Well you couldn't blame her. She walked into the bedroom and guess what she found? All the clothes are out of the drawer and scattered all over the carpet and there he was, the alleged criminal, little Ivan.

In the winter of twenty-nineteen,
In the winter of twenty-nineteen, I began thinking about Cody. I had recalled those nights not so far from here, where we once lay together. The trees were bare, stretched out behind our window, and the sky was always so blue. While I thought about it, I could smell that air again, like treacle, through our open window, and it had breathed across layers of dust. And your bed- slightly warm against my back, and my hands were always in yours, and you’d nestle in my neck, too,- and your record player would sit on the cabinet beside us, where you would always play such soft music.
