The Trap of Eclecticism
• • • If pure reason fails, and pure empiricism fails, why not just take the best from each? Borrow what works from rationalism. Borrow what works from empiricism. Add a little existentialism for emotional depth, a little pragmatism for practical guidance, perhaps some mysticism for spiritual richness. Blend them together. The Difference Between Describing and Explaining
• • • A bullet is fired. It strikes a person. The person falls. Experts arrive at the scene. They can reconstruct the event with extraordinary precision. The trigger was pulled. A firing pin struck the primer. The primer ignited the charge. Gas drove the bullet through the barrel at a specific velocity. The bullet traveled a measurable distance, shattered a pane of glass at a calculable angle, and entered the body at a specific point.
