Today’s case takes us to Guaymallén, in the Province of Mendoza, Argentina. Karen Oviedo lived there in a white house that in turn was a neighborhood store with Rolando Ángel Aquino, her husband.

Her acquaintances say that they were very affectionate with each other and that she always posted photos on Facebook to express how much she loved him.

Although it is not yet clear how they met or how long they had been together, it is known that in November 2020 they got married after a tragic event that took place a year earlier.

Rolando had a 9-year-old son named Elias, the result of a previous relationship. In July 2019, the boy who was perfectly well went to his father and stepmother’s house to spend a few days. Suddenly on July 7 he began to feel unwell so the couple took him to the hospital.

But there the little one did not improve and finally on July 12 he died from a multi-organ failure. The strange thing was that Elias had no medical history and always enjoyed good health.

After her death Karen proposed that the little one be incinerated to which her biological mother refused because it was very important for her to bury him and have a place where she could bring him flowers.

Undoubtedly the death of Elias was a terrible misfortune but what relatives could least imagine was that two years later Rolando would die in a similar way to that of his son.

February 2021:

February 7, 2021 was Sunday and at about 3 p.m. Rolando, 35, began to vomit in the living room of his house, so much so that at one point he fainted. Because of this, Karen called for emergencies.

When the doctors arrived at the house, they found the man unconscious on the floor. The first thing that caught their attention was that his wife didn’t look worried, in fact she was quite calm. Rolando was rushed to the hospital in the area where he died two days later.

The doctors revealed that the man died from severe intoxication and that it had been caused by a strange substance he had in his body. This set off the alarms so the doctors warned the police who in turn requested an autopsy to find out the name of the unknown substance that had ended the man’s life.

When the report arrived, everyone was shocked since the chemical analysis said that the man had ethylene glycol in his body, that is, a liquid refrigerant for engines that is potentially harmful to health.

This liquid is known to cause damage to the liver and heart because when it enters the body it crystallizes. Then it causes a chemical imbalance and alters the nervous system.

Prosecutor Ríos received the results of Rolando’s autopsy and immediately began to investigate the case as a homicide. One of the first measures was to take a statement from Karen, the wife of the deceased. And here it must be said that his testimony was quite flemly.

Karen stated that her husband had been feeling sick for days and blamed a medicine he was taking for some spots he had on skin. When the agents asked her about the name of that medicine, the woman didn’t know the name. Then they asked her for the bottle but she didn’t deliver it because according to her had thrown it away.

Faced with this, the investigators cited the employee who made Karen’s situation quite complicated. The woman said that she had seen her boss mix a substance in the orange juice she gave to her husband. To this she added that the man refused to take it, but that she insisted until she convinced him.

With this information and suspecting Karen, prosecutor Ríos ordered a raid on the house where the woman lived with her husband. There they found a semi-empty bottle of antifreeze liquid for vehicles, but they undoubtedly found the most incriminating thing when they checked her mobile phone.

In her Google history they saw that before her husband’s death Karen had searched for things like: “What is the deadliest substance”, “how to kill with a substance” and “how to delete the search history”,

On the other hand, in the purchase files of the Mercado Libre application there was another key piece and it was the purchase of a bottle of antifreeze.

With all these elements on February 16, 2022, Karen was arrested at her home and in March she was accused of aggravated homicide by insidious procedure. But the case didn’t end there because the authorities decided to investigate Elias’ death.

To do this, the little one was autopsied. In a report that arrived in June 2022, the experts determined that the child’s death was compatible with poisoning from the intake of methanol or ethylene glycol, that is, the same as his father.

The trial:

On November 18, 2022 and after 10 months in pretrial detention Karen Oviedo sat on the bench of the courts to be tried for the death of Rolando Ángel Aquino and his son.

The session had twelve members on the jury in addition to the defense lawyer and the prosecutors Claudia Ríos and Fernando Guzzo and the defense lawyer.

From the beginning, the prosecutor’s office accused Karen of having ended the life of Rolando and Elías. According to them, for several days the woman supplied them with coolant in the orange juice, which in the end caused an intoxication so great that it caused a multi-organ failure in the victims.

Fernando Cuzzo said the following:

“The two causes of death respond to the same mechanism and produced the same picture: an intoxication by an antifreeze. His action was through a hidden or disguised deception.”

For his part, Karen’s lawyer tried to prove that Rolando abused her defendant on several occasions and that she acted like this to defend herself. To this he added that it was Rolando who bought the antifreeze and asked that the verdict be based on logical decisions.

Even so, the prosecutors managed to gather enough evidence to overthrow this theory. The main proof was the searches that Karen had done from her mobile phone about the lethal substance, not to mention that it was registered that she herself had acquired it through the free market.

As if this were not enough, the statement of Claudia Cortéz was also taken into account, the maid who heard a conversation between the couple in which Rolando said “everything you give me, does me bad.”

The toxicology reports of Rolando and Elias were presented at the trial. There it was learned that when the prosecutor’s office linked the cases, they asked the family for help, who also testified that Karen’s attitude was quite strange after the child died. And it must be remembered that Karen was the one who insisted that the little one be cremated but fortunately the biological mother refused and they could know that he died in the same way as her father.

Before the jury Karen declared innocent and referred to Rolando as her ex-husband although at the time of the events they lived together. The woman said that he was a “very jealous man, that he “didn’t like him talking to the suppliers” about the business they had and that he was constantly checking her mobile phone.

When they asked her about google searches and the purchase of antifreeze, Karen told the following story that, as you will see, she has neither feet nor head.

A few days before Ronaldo died, she received a notification on her mobile phone from the Mercado Libre application that caught her attention more than anything because she had not bought anything on that site. When she checked what it was about, she was surprised since it was a purchase of antifreeze. This led her to search Google what kind of product that was.

The report of the psychiatrists who saw Karen was also devastating. In it, they qualified the woman as a self-centered person, without empathy, dominant and unable to manage her anger if she did not receive what she wanted. In addition, she showed no signs of having suffered abuse.

After listening to the Prosecutor’s Office, reviewing the evidence and taking into account the strange arguments of the defense, on December 1, 2022, the popular jury convened for the session found Karen Oviedo 32 years old guilty of simple homicide and aggravated homicide. For all this, she was sentenced to the maximum penalty in Argentina, that is, life imprisonment.
