There is an alternate universe in which it is still 1985 or 1986. MTV still plays music. Madonna and Cyndi Lauper are still, like, really hot; and the center of every small town social set is a weekend trip to the mall. Malls are big centers of shopping activity that encompass clothing, movies, books, arcade games, such as Pac Man and Frogger (spend them quarters, kids); food, drink, toys and, most especially, MUSIC. Music is everywhere, an endemic part of the shopping mall experience, as ingrained into the fleshly soul of every consumer as that weird, plastic, fresh merchandise smell (which invariably gets all mixed up with the smell coming out of the Cinnabuns, or the dank effluvia of the bath and body-works store).
Why We Need Ashley Tisdale
As we head into the summer, it seems we are moving into a season of musical comebacks. I, for one, could not be happier. Like many others, I witnessed the Jonas Brothers appearance on James Corden. I also was glad to hear Aly and AJ's new single. However, I am most excited about my teenage role model returning to the studio. I believe that it is because of her musical background and impact that it is the time for Ashley Tisdale.
Julia RisitanoPublished 5 years ago in BeatReason First: The Wisdom of Wayne
Who is it that says that rappers lack the discipline of erudition? Lil’ Wayne foregoing a security check at the Rolling Loud musical festival probably proved to be the right thing to do. Because of his past incarceration, and altercations with law enforcement he just decided to skip that drama and perform at a second venue known as STORY for the afterparty. The wisdom of Wayne shows his keen awareness of situations. Who knows what Wayne carried with him those moments before stage time?
Skyler SaundersPublished 5 years ago in BeatIn My Opinion: The Ten Greatest Male Vocalists of All Time
Male vocalists are abundant, especially in the era of music I am most interested in (the 1950s and 60s). But there are some that stand out as being the best in their field. I understand that we may not agree entirely on this list, but know that I have based this off my own personal opinions, so please don't go attacking me on social media, or saying nasty things about me–because I'll just block you on said social media site. Mostly, I want to stress that this is a top ten list, but there may be featured "more mentions" before we finish the list for good.
Annie KapurPublished 5 years ago in BeatCharlie Strange, a Music Video, a Sandwich, and the Taste of Our Era
A sad piece of bread is getting covered in slow motion with an even sadder mayonnaise. Chunks of floppy lettuce are thrown on some cheese, the kind of cheese that would probably not melt after two hours of baking. A dirty pink, unnatural color coming from industrial meat slices completes the palette. If a little twist at the end of the four-ish minute video takes the viewer by surprise in a first phase (no spoiler alert), it is only to reinforce an impression of reclusion; of meal-for-one situation; of a rushed everyday routine; of forced standardization in a capitalist era; of a heavy duty to wear a happy face mask outside of the house, like the artist Polly Nor’s characters would do.

Rasma RaistersPublished 5 years ago in BeatApril’s Anthems—The Best of Last Month’s Music
In many ways, April was the first month that felt inspired when it comes to music in 2019. Until now, the year has felt like it’s had patches of brilliance, but nothing to truly write home about. However, after the fourth month on the calendar, it feels like we’re truly underway when it comes to fantastic releases.
Nathan SartainPublished 5 years ago in BeatMy Top 20 Essential Albums (Pt. 2)
This is the second part to my top 20 essential albums and I'm making this because I really just couldn't fit all my favourites into the first part. If you haven't read Part One, then you can read it here. It may help when it comes to understanding this second part.
Annie KapurPublished 5 years ago in BeatIn Defense of Modern Music
Sometimes, I imagine myself in another era, in some parallel universe where my birth certificate says "1975" instead of "2000." I see myself in a baggy green flannel shirt and jeans I ripped myself, doing the rounds of my local record shop. I imagine turning over the vinyls in my hands, talking to the person behind the counter, finding music through word of mouth and through music channels instead of on Spotify. I imagine a life where I see Kurt Cobain live on TV as a tangible, living, breathing person instead of a memory immortalised in a music video. It was a great time, so I'm told. The stars were daring, rebellious, and uncensored. They had integrity and originality. Sometimes this nostalgia is followed by some nose-wrinkling, some sighing, and comments along the lines of, "Shame it's not like that anymore. It all sounds the same nowadays. It's all so... safe."
E.W HemmingsPublished 5 years ago in BeatMusic and The Enlightenment
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines The Enlightenment as “a philosophical movement of the 18th century marked by a rejection of traditional social, religious, and political ideas and an emphasis on rationalism”. The Enlightenment was a time of change, of development as a society. The effect of shunning the old ways and moving forward from the ties of tradition. The Enlightenment changed every aspect of society, including music. During the Enlightenment, changes in thinking and seeing the world had an impact on how music was written and distributed.
