So, You Found Yourself at a Party Full of Vampires
October's sweet, sharp breath chills the air as leaves drop to the ground. The sky darkens but the mood brightens: black and orange streamers decorate lawns and plastic fangs hang from laughing mouths. Costumes, both bright and macabre, begin to line the streets.

One of my favorite times of the year! Halloween is the time to be with the people you love, dress up and act a little crazy. I have a Halloween playlist that I listen to every year and I add songs to it if I hear one that deserves to be on it.

Not that there's anything wrong with "Monsters Mash", and it's definitely on my playlist, but you'll need to expand your definition of Halloween music unless you want to drive party guests crazy with the same few songs on repeat all night.

Music has proven to soothe the soul in a time of needing comfort, provide ambience for a romantic setting, motivate when one needs to bring intensity, join lightheartedness with good spirited fun, or bring terror to the mind whether the tone or lyrics stimulate a fear we have.

So here in the UK, we kinda 'try' to Halloween, but it ends up a very lukewarm milky thing, hey, like our tea. Over in 'Murica you guys have it down pat - so much so that I kinda don't want to be there when it happens? Like y'all *get into it* into it, and I've never been good with gore. So when I saw this Challenge I honestly scrolled past, keen not even attempt to take the crown of our Amercian cousins.

If Childish Gambino, Halsey, Sting, Doja Cat, Ani Difranco, Eminem, Gwen Stefani, and Bruce Springsteen* were all at the same rock festival, it's hard to imagine a lot of overlap between their fans. They range from rockstars to rap gods to champions of the working class. Yet despite their differences there are a thread of similarities that are apparent in their personality and musical career.

Halloween is for everyone. You can come for the tricks or you can come for the treats. You can come for the chance to play pretend. If only for one night, you can escape, forget yourself and be someone else.

I'm not a huge Halloween fan. This is a surprise to you, isn't it? After all, aren't I the one who dresses up and goes to the Comic conventions with my grandchildren? Aren't I the one who takes advantage of a passing resemblence to a certain someone who held a writer hostage and made him write a sequel her way?

I love Halloween so to create a playlist for it, it's a great time machine for me through years, sound and variety of what I can recall for this day.

When Jason Molina sings, "I've been riding with the ghost/ I've been doing whatever he told me," you don't doubt the guy for a minute. What better way to start any Halloween playlist than with a song from a guy who knows from ghosts, real ghosts, the ones that won't be bought off with a scoop of candy corn?

Pick a Monster and I’ll Treat You With a Playlist
Calling all monsters! (And mortal music-lovers who wish they were monsters.) Have you ever been out partying with your fellow creatures of the night only to have a disappointing selection of tunes? There's nothing worse than getting yourself dolled up for a blood-sucking masquerade ball or undead graveyard smash only to dance to rehashings of "Monster Mash" and "The Addams Family" theme song. Is the DJ playing Michael Jackson's "Thriller" for the upteenth time? It's no use wasting your immortality or afterlife on cliché Halloween tracks.
