Living Without a Microwave
If you're reading this, you've probably considered ditching your microwave and you may be a bit intimidated by the thought of losing that convenience. Health concerns are the main reason I've heard other people trying to use microwaves less, but you don't have to be afraid of your food becoming radioactive to enjoy other methods of reheating your food. Are microwaves bad for us? Probably. Was that enough to make me stop using them? Absolutely not. I'm just that picky, I guess.

Everything Seasoning CrackersTop Story - December 2023
It's time for another crunchy cracker recipe! While my cheddar crackers are my most popular, these everything crackers have a few die-hard fans who are always on the lookout for a restock. This recipe is very similar to the cheddar crackers. Originally, I used butter in this recipe like I do with the cheddar, but I wanted to make an option that I could share with friends who don't eat dairy. So, on a whim, I switched out the butter for olive oil. They were an absolute hit!

Cheesy Discard Crackers
"I cannot stop eating these crackers!" I've gotten a text or comment like that more than once about these cheddar crackers. Even my picky "brand-name only" nephew loves them. They're one of my top-selling items at the farmer's market, and you'll soon find out why! The sourdough discard gives a little bit of a tang that mimics Cheez-Its and the garlic powder gives the cheesiness a little bit of a boost without tasting like garlic much at all.

Reviving Midge
I call her Midge, but you don't have to. You can choose what to name your sourdough starter, but names are a must. An unnamed starter is doomed to fail! Just kidding, but it's a lot more fun to care for Phoebe, Carter the Starter, or DoughBoy than a nameless jar of sludge. Got a name in mind? Then let's get started!

Coconut Water Lemonade Gummies
If your kids are anything like mine, they want gummies all day every day. But many store-bought gummy snacks have dyes, additives, and "natural" flavoring. Thankfully, they love homemade gummies made with fruit juice! You can use any kind of juice or liquid to make gummies, and you'll find different recipes quite easily, but these lemonade gummies have been a hit with even my pickiest guests. You just need 4 ingredients.

Apple Crumble Granola
A crumb cake and rolled oats walk into a bar..... Just kidding; this granola is so good that I don't want to sit here and think of an ending to that joke. I want to dive right in! Every time I pour milk over a bowl of these crisp clumps of brown sugar, butter, apple, oats, and cinnamon, my day is instantly better. Here's how you can enjoy it right from your own kitchen!

UglyYummies Top 5 Uses for a Whole Chicken
Roasting a whole chicken seems like a lost art these days. A lot of people will use all of the parts of a chicken separately but are afraid of the whole bird. I think that is partially due to feeling wasteful because they don't know how to get the most out of it. But whole chickens are a great way to get higher quality chicken on your table for a good price. Now, pasture-raised chickens are probably the highest quality you can find, but they average around $16 to $20 each, from what I've seen. The next best would be free-range/organic and that will easily cut your costs.

UglyYummies Top 5 Dinners for Beginners
If you're a tired home cook, this one goes out to you. I'm a mom of two (though one is still in the oven) in the throes of pregnancy fatigue, struggling to feed my small family a fresh meal at the end of every day. While the small details of my situation don't apply to everyone, I know many of you are in the same boat of finding it difficult to put another hot meal on the table that isn't Hamburger Helper or Digiorno pizza. Hopefully, this list can help you get a head start on changing that, even just a little.

Defining Uselessness
I wrote this post on a personal blog on December 23, 2015. I was a junior in college, studying English and Religious Studies at Texas State University. Since its original publication, I graduated from TXST with Highest Honors, in the top 5 percent of my class—not too bad for a dumb liberal arts student! I married an electrical engineer, who, even though most people find him far more intelligent and impressive than me, values my brain and talents more than almost anyone else does. Today, I'm a professional content writer, a teacher, and a soon to be homeschool curriculum writer. If you have supported me through my educational journey and pursuit of writing, even just by reading my infrequent Vocal posts, I sincerely thank you.

'The Girl from Blind River'
Summary: The Girl From Blind River by Gale Massey is a crime thriller and somewhat a coming-of-age story. The protagonist, Jamie Elders, comes from a family of con artists and though she wants to escape the cycle, participating in the "family trade" seems like her best chance at getting what she needs. Because her mother has spent a significant portion of her life in prison, Jamie and her younger brother Toby live with their uncle Loyal. Loyal is an abusive man who runs a secret gambling operation, which is rigged in favor of himself and the local judge. This partnership leads to the main event, which doesn't initially involve Jamie, but she is pulled in and made an accomplice. When it gets down to the wire, going to prison or walking away depends on one of her greatest talents: poker.
