The Change
At times in his life, Robert longed for the cherished summer days and the comfort and safety of his youth. He’d spent the first 18 years of his life in St. John's Newfoundland, a city with less than 100,000 people. For most of those years, he lived in a small rural area on the outskirts, where everybody knew you and your family. It was a perfect place for kids to grow up, especially during summer break. The houses all backed onto the forest, where the kids would play all day; exploring, climbing trees and swimming and fishing in the many small rivers and ponds. It was where kids grew up learning the value of helping others, and being honest. These values, he discovered when he moved to Toronto, were not held by everybody.

Where we started
The three couples dated through the first two years of high school and spent a lot of time together. During the school year, they would spend most weekends doing things as a group. They would go to movies, attend school dances, or hang out at the mall or each other's houses. They all became good friends, including Robert and Maryanne. She was growing into the woman she would become, and Robert thought she was becoming more beautiful every time he saw her.

Finding Us
Robert, upset by the flight delay but thankful he’d forgotten his wallet at the hotel on the day of the accident, decided to look for a place to buy a cell phone at the airport. John, always the planner, told Robert that he always kept a card in his wallet with a list of important phone numbers whenever he travelled. He said that Robert should do the same, just in case something bad ever happened. Robert was thankful that he took John's advice when he arrived at Hong Kong airport. When he first found out about the delay, he tried using a payphone to call Maryanne. He tried several times, but the calls kept dropping before he could get through.
