Now or Later
“This isn’t real. Please tell me I’m dreaming.” Jessamine put her face in her hands and rubbed her eyes in disbelief. She had been sleeping, but the rattle of the boxcar had woken her. When she opened her eyes, the scene was the same: a loaded boxcar full of other people huddled together, with only one way out as the train sped along the tracks. “Where am I?”

The Haunting of 3:33
Tom was never late for anything. When he woke up on a moving train, with no recollection of how he got there or where he was, he was baffled, to say the least. His suit was torn, and his nose was bloody, and he couldn’t recall, for the life of him, what he’d been doing before waking up here.

Tears, Ears
For as long as I can remember, it was just me and dad. Growing up, there were a few things I could always count on: Dad’s guidance, a best friend, and popcorn. I guess I’m one of the lucky ones; I know not everyone has a dad in their life, and many more have dads that are subpar. Though we didn’t always have a lot, I knew I could always count on mine, even if it meant watching Star Wars or Star Trek and eating popcorn for dinner. There could be worse things.

Highland Dragons
There weren't always dragons in the valley. My daughter called them dragons, and perhaps they were. Though they were horsebacked, they swept the Scottish Highlands, forcing many of my people to bow in fear to a foreign and Protestant king. They didn't breathe fire, per se, but the coats they wore were the color of blood. These dragons carried more ammunition than we'd ever seen.

The Lair of the Baobhan Sith
There isn't much of the supernatural in the Scottish Highlands, but for the baobhan sith. Much like a banshee and vampire mixed, but is actually a dark fae, the baobhan sith is always a woman. She makes her home in the moors and swamps, drifting near enough to civilization to eat at night, calling out to those who taste of blood. Her hooves crunch the bones of the devoured, wayward souls that litter the Highland moors. On April 15, 1743, the trees fade into open grassland as the sun sinks below the horizon. A white and brown barn owl flies overhead, searching for it's dinner.

Self Care, or Depression?
Rest, and relaxation. Time off from the busy work and life schedules. How can you tell if it's burnout or if you're simply depressed? It depends. When time off happens, the first thing people like to do (myself included) is sleep in. Often times, it doesn't happen for many of us, whether it's internal clocks, children, or animals keeping us from our precious sleep. I know the bed always feels the most comfortable right before you have to get out of it.

The Golden Rule
There are two main rules in life: stay in your bubble, and don’t look past the screen. Its something your elders tell you, but you don't really know what it means. Most people shrug it off, and are content to live in the day-to-day fluctuations. They don't want to look past their own microscopic lives, past their televisions and their phone screens. Others, like me, know better. There's more to this life than we think.
