The One that Got Away
Surprise love gained, and lost
I remember the first time I glanced a flash of blue, such a fierce hue
that contrasted so with the bright overhead lights, blinded me - so bright!
A gasp left me as hazel met blue, the glint of golden crown
it took my soul's breath away, and slowly made me drown.
A start of friendship bloomed to more, and how perfect life was then!
Until another blue took me under their wing,
and another hazel memory called you king.
Away I went, but still we tried, and for a while it did well,
though hazel loomed and tortured me, and kept you under spell.
I wept for my loss of you, if only you felt the same.
Things could have been so different if you hadn't gone astray.
Then again a decade later, a brief flash of familiar blue;
But too late, too late! I tell myself, I no longer cry for you.
Though memories are cherished and your presence sorely missed,
I picked myself up off the ground, skin rough and still dirt-kissed.
A sunset now of faded reds was much like our good-bye,
I'm gone again and different, adapted to the night.
