Sacrifices Made
There are small eyes peering out from the bushes surrounding the clearing, the color not unlike new tree branches or the leaf litter on the ground. Te’sara-zura is quite used to most things being smaller than her. She had grown taller than the oldest tree in her territory long ago and often she was the biggest living thing for miles. But most small things she was used to. Most were covered in soft fur or had hard exoskeletons. Most did not tremble against the cold, frosted ground or watch her for so long un-startled. The little creature had skin like the tree-flesh hidden by rough bark and hair the color of her mountainous cousins’ claws. Despite these colors, that Te’sara-zura thought of as well protected and hard, the little one was so soft.

In the Nest
Gus heard talk of a creature that roamed the forest from a port village first. But most of the villages spoke of the creature. Some only spoke of one, but if you listened close enough to the stories it sounded more like there were about three or four that had been seen moving in the vast sea of trees that bordered the valleys villages. From the ocean, that presumably was past some of the trees, ships that came to port told of sightings of the great winged creatures as well.

A Girl Named Hera
Hera was born at night. The moon was new and her mother was alone save the nurse who said the doctor would be there soon. Her mother knew the doctor wasn’t going to make it. Her mother knew that the family wouldn’t make it. Her mother knew that Hera herself was barely going to make it into this world. Hera was born with a head full of curls matted across her forehead and an ear piercing scream. It was foretold and it was done.
