On Tuesday September 8, John Jay traveled to Fox Lane, and at 20-20, Evangeline Santos served three aces to propel the home team to a 25-20 set one victory. But the next three games had the Wolves making sure there was plenty of separation at the outset of each.

The Price of Locking Down a Star
Braun had a habit tonight guarding Alexander. Every time SGA caught the ball at the top of the arc, Braun didn’t look at the ball first. He turned his head to check where Jokic was. Only then did he turn back, set his feet, and tilt his body slightly to the left, nudging SGA right, toward Jokic.

He Was a God in College. The NBA Buried Him on the Bench.
Tyler Hansbrough was a god at North Carolina. The record book bent around him. He arrived as a McDonald’s All-American, a Jordan Brand Classic MVP, a player who had already broken the Nike camp scoring record. As a freshman, he started, led the team in scoring, and broke the ACC freshman single-game scoring record. As a junior, he broke the ACC junior total points record and North Carolina’s career free throws made record. As a senior, he broke North Carolina’s career scoring record and the NCAA career free throws made record. He was the first ACC freshman ever to make first-team All-ACC. He was the only player in NCAA history to be a consensus first-team All-American four times. He was National Player of the Year. He won the John Wooden Award.

When Did She Stop Trusting Her Shot?
I don’t know about you, but I’m glad it’s over. If Caitlin Clark is Charlie Brown, and the basketball is the football, then Lucy is the WNBA. You know the bit. She holds it. He runs. She pulls it away. He ends up on his back, staring at the sky, wondering what he did wrong this time.

Kevin Durant Is Still a Great Scorer. That Was Never the Whole Job.
This season, the Rockets put Durant back into a familiar script. He played almost every regular-season game. At thirty-six, with a ruptured Achilles and years of knee and ankle injuries behind him, he played eighty-one games and averaged thirty-seven minutes. Udoka could not rest him. Houston’s offense stalled without him. Şengün needed Durant’s gravity on the weak side. Green needed Durant’s spacing at the top. VanVleet needed Durant as the last option in the pick-and-roll. Durant started on time, scored, got back on defense, and posted up again.

Japan’s Trash Talk Is Loud. The Scoreboard Is Louder.
Pre-Match Words, Points on the Table At the mixed zone of the Nagoya training hall, Sora Matsushima stood in front of the microphones. A reporter asked for his thoughts on the Chinese team. He paused, then said: "The Japanese team is very strong right now. I think even if we only play at 50 to 60 percent, we still have a chance to beat China."
