Political Power to the People

The Inevitable Rise of Populism and the Need for Increasing Self-Governance

By Michael ThielmannPublished 6 years ago 3 min read
The people always had more power than they realized.

The basic crux of the matter is that people are fed up with big governments and the centralization of power in general. Even on a municipal level, people feel left out of the loop and ignored for the most part by their elected officials.

The solution is and always has been for humanity to claim its individual and collective sovereignty and take back our power from the mirage of false political promises.

"Power to the people" is not meant to be an empty phrase used by populists to win the votes of 'ordinary' citizens. It is pointing to the reality that you and I and everyone else already have all the power we need to create a better world; we just need to learn how to tap into it and implement it.

People will be more and more attracted to populist-style messages from politicians as a basic response to the corruption and ineffectiveness of big governments that clearly have their own agenda separate from their citizens. The European Union is a great example of how ever-ballooning governments leave people feeling increasingly powerless and helpless.

That is why populism and national sovereignty is making a comeback in Europe as well as in America. Unfortunately, this is just the pendulum swinging in the other direction. What we really need is to distribute power and influence as widely as possible to humanity as a whole rather than placing our faith in one leader over another.

We have to think as locally as possible if we aspire to create a truly functional human society. Organizations like the EU are globalist in nature; a small group of people dictates what happens for millions of citizens. As the government grows, so does the frustration and desperation of people simply trying to live happy, productive lives.

The answer truly does lie at a grassroots level, but not necessarily in the way people are used to thinking. If I want to make change in my town or city, what is the best way to go about it?

Not everyone has the gumption or tenacity to run for city council or engage on a political level at all. This is part of the illusion; we are taught that only elected leaders who we see on TV are capable of making significant change.

In truth, we all have individual gifts, abilities, and attributes that can and do contribute in ways that may not be televised but are very important nonetheless. Simply by following our natural inclinations in life we will create a ripple effect that will ultimately create true positive change.

Political power in a healthy sense always happens from the ground up. Think about a council of elders in an indigenous tribe. How did they get to their esteemed position? By virtue of their age and experiential wisdom and because they are naturally respected by their fellows within the community. They are elevated from the ground up rather than imposing themselves on others in the top-down model of governance we have come to loathe in modern society.

Rather than arguing over what politician or model of governance is "less bad," we can all step up to the plate in our own lives. We yearn to see truly inspiring people rather than corrupt and manipulative false idols.

The good news is that we can all become the inspirational figures we long to see in the world. The revolutionary message of "Power to the People" is not meant to be a violent ideology to inspire some sort of coup d'état.

The core message is to stop externalizing our own power and being caught in the inevitable disappointment that ensues. As with all my work, I recommend that we start with ourselves, our families, and our immediate communities if we want to see true social and political change.
