Last Call Challenge Winners

There were plenty of ringing phones and closing bars in Last Call, but the prompt took us to some unexpected places too. A fading birdsong, a goodbye that doesn't quite get finished, and people who don't suddenly become better versions of themselves just because time is running out. Some held on, some let go, and some missed their chance entirely. That's what made these stories stick.

The False Raven of Sorrows by Jonathan Huston

Jonathan Huston made me care about a bird whose keeper I didn't entirely trust. The fans have taken over the house, but recording that disappearing call can apparently wait. His devotion to Jonny is touching, even when it's hard to ignore how badly he wants to keep the bird all to himself.

3 AM by Ecarg Nosive

By closing time, I understood Desiree's impatience, even when I didn't particularly like her. Ecarg Nosive lets her gripe about customers and tips all night, then makes that hurried goodbye at the start hit a lot harder.

I appreciated that kp doesn't give Charlie a sudden change of heart just because he's running out of time. He's still making excuses for himself right up to the end.

Hope by Sam Spinelli

Michael didn't have some noble reason for missing that call. Sam makes his guilt feel real enough that I understood why he'd give up everything for another chance, even when I didn't trust the caller.

Hold Onto It for as Long as You Need To by Paul Stewart

I loved that Paul made room for coffee rings on the toilet cistern in Sophia's goodbye. Even as speaking gets harder, she's still complaining, cracking jokes, and wanting her husband.
