Let’s explore the psychology of a good deed

I was at a donut shop the other day and the lady behind the counter gave me some free donuts, just because. I was shocked by the sudden act, but felt super stoked that I got free donuts. When I left the donut shop and got into my car, I felt something coming down my face and noticed that I started tearing up over free donuts.

I spent the rest of the day trying to understand why a random act of kindness affected me this much and realized that these seemingly small gestures hold immense power and can create a ripple effect that can extend far beyond the act. So in this article, let’s dive into why random acts of kindness are so freaking powerful.

The Science Of Kindness

There are many ways to examine the concept of kindness whether if its through ethics, or social theories, but by understanding the intricate psychological dynamics of kindness can shed some light on why these seemingly small gestures hold such significant power.

When people engage in acts of kindness, their brains release a surge of neurotransmitters such as oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine. This surge of chemicals is often referred to as the “helper’s high” and these feel-good chemicals create a cascade of positive emotions that contribute to feelings of joy, satisfaction, and a sense of accomplishment.

In fact, people who consistently engage in acts of kindness report a greater sense of purpose and connection to their communities. This sense of purpose is closely tied to their overall well-being and mental health, as it provides a foundation for personal growth and a deeper understanding of one’s role in the world. This experience not only enhances one’s mood, but it can also promote a positive sense of self-perception and increased self-esteem to yourself and even those around you.

In some of our favorite television shows, we’ve seen characters who exemplify optimism and consistently perform acts of kindness no matter what. Characters like Leslie Knope from Parks and Rec, Phil Dunphy from Modern Family, and Ted Lasso from Ted Lasso not only show us how powerful and uplifting being consistently kind to others can be, but how it can spread onto others. The fact they all spread this golden retriever like energy onto their pessimistic friends and family is a clear case of how infectious kindness and positivity can be.

Breaking Down Barriers

While we have seen how consistent acts of kindness can break down social and personal barriers to those around us in pop culture. Random acts of kindness are arguably more powerful, because they have the exceptional ability and range to break down social and emotional barriers due to it’s sudden and impromptu nature.

These sudden acts of kindness can transcend cultural, racial, and economical divides, because kindness is a universal language that everyone can understand and appreciate. In a world that is often divided by differences, these acts of compassion remind us of our shared humanity, bringing people together and fostering a sense of unity.

When we experience kindness from a stranger, it can challenge and disprove our preconceived notions and stereotypes, and even promote positive attitudes towards others. Every person has experienced it at one point or another and when someone does something nice for you, just because, the rest of your day becomes brighter and better.

In fact, this newfound openness from a spur-of-the-moment act can extend beyond it and can lead to a greater understanding and acceptance of diverse perspectives and backgrounds. The 2016 sitcom The Good Place is clear example of this as we see the moral evolution of Eleanor from a selfish Arizona dirtbag to a kind, caring, and moral person who would do things for others because she can.

Fosters Compassion

Random acts of kindness serve as a living example of empathy and compassion in action. Witnessing or experiencing an act of kindness can inspire others to emulate this behavior, creating a positive chain reaction. By seeing how a simple gesture can make a significant impact on someone’s day or life, people become more attuned to the needs of others, fostering a society that is empathetic and caring.

We especially see these acts of kindness with content creators on Youtube, Tiktok, and Instagram who give back to their communities in ways no one sees coming. The effects of receiving something grand so randomly can feel like a literal blessing and can make people break down in tears, because whenever we are going through something tough, it is hard to gain genuine empathy and compassion from strangers.

In fact, just by watching this kind of content can allow us as viewers to connect with the emotions of both the giver and the receiver, fostering a deeper sense of empathy. As this empathy grows, so does our desire to contribute positively to the well-being of others, promoting a culture of care and consideration.

Combats Cynicism

In a world where negative news often dominates media platforms, random acts of kindness provides a powerful counterbalance to this. These acts remind us that despite the adversities and hardships we face, there is still compassion and goodness in the world. They serve as a beacon of hope, encouraging people to focus on the positive and cultivate a more optimistic outlook.

Moreover, engaging in acts of kindness can act as a coping mechanism in times of stress or negativity. By directing our energy towards helping others, we shift our perspective away from negative influences and become agents of positive change. This can be particularly valuable in combating the pervasive cynicism that can sometimes pervade society, inspiring people to embrace a more hopeful and compassionate worldview.

Content creators such as Mr. Beast is known for his generosity and randomly giving people suitcases filled with money and brand new cars and the people he has blessed with these random acts have without a doubt had their lives changed for the better. While many still believe this kind of content is fake, random acts of kindness literally disproves this level of cynicism that is running amok in this world.

Down To Do A Random Act Of Kindness?

Random acts of kindness are not merely fleeting moments of positivity; they are catalysts for profound change and transformation. By embracing and promoting kindness, we can create a world that values empathy, compassion, and connection, leading us to a brighter and more harmonious future.
