In life, you can turn any disadvantage into an advantage. Including depression, believe it or not. I noticed that even if God puts us in circumstances that will make us feel depressed, he does so on purpose so that he can see if we will rise from it like a phoenix from the ashes or if we will stay in the ashes. Let me give you two examples so you can see what I am talking about: one from an MMA fighter and one from a well-known boxer.
Andre Fili, an MMA fighter, stated in his post-fight interview, almost to the point of tears, that he lost a child on the way to the fight, and guess what? He still won the fight, despite the fact that it left him feeling not just sad, but definitely depressed, as I know from personal experience. But he still got into that cage and fought, and not only did he fight, but he also won the fight. And the only reason he won that fight was that he realized that he needed to fight not only in the cage to win the fight, but also before he entered the cage if he wanted to win in life.
It's not about the fight, he says, because people only see 1% of the fighters' stories; everything that happens before the fight determines who wins. He used that reason to dedicate the fight to his late son, saying at the end of the interview, "I want to dedicate this fight to whoever they could've been, I love you so much."He could have easily let that stop him and mentally destroy him, causing him to give up fighting, lose motivation, and not fight, or simply not prepare enough and lose in the end, or simply lose regardless of what hurt him. But, as Bruce Lee once said, "pain will leave once it has finished teaching you."
The next example I am going to share with you, which you have probably already heard, but which I think is worth sharing, is the heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury.
Tyson Fury was a guy who was overweight, doing drugs, eating unhealthy food, and living an unhealthy life. He admitted that he was in a depressed state of mind. But as some of you know, he was a heavyweight boxing champion, and you might think to yourself right now, How the hell did he pull that out? Well, as you can see, this example of a man is much different than the last one, Andre, who lost his kid. This is something else; this guy was not a boxer when he decided to box. Andre Fili was already an MMA fighter, overcoming obstacles on his way to one of the many fights of his MMA career, but Tyson Fury was just a guy who was doing drugs and living a life that would make anyone depressed. But he still managed to become the heavyweight champion of the world and defend his title multiple times.
So the question remains: how the hell did Tyson pull it off? Well, let's put it this way: he got tired of being the guy he was; he wanted to know what his life purpose was; all of a sudden, it hit him, and he went for a run, but he was so heavy that he couldn't even run far enough to call it a run, so let's talk about a depressed man and what happened to him that was depressing. But he then tried it again, and again, and again, until he ran to his final decision, which was his dream to become the heavyweight champion of the world.
Fun fact about Tyson Fury: did you know that he was named after the famous Myke „Iron" Tyson? In fact, Myke Tyson and Fury Tyson had a podcast where Tyson Fury said that I encourage you to watch it. A brief conversation between two heavyweight goats in the heavyweight division, Talk about being destined to become a heavyweight boxer, huh?
In conclusion, what I've got to say to you, my dear reader, is that success does not come from success, it comes from sadness. Use that sadness as fuel to enhance whatever you are doing to become the best version of yourself. It can be any other negative emotion but sadness, but in this case, I am writing specifically about sadness and depression. I will be diving more into aggression and other negative emotions later on in my future writing, but until then I encourage you to embrace whatever you are feeling to make the best possible version of yourself. And as always, do not make me believe in you more than you do in yourself. See you next time.
