If you or a loved one is dealing with an addiction and needs help before the problem spirals out of control (if it hasn’t already) it is best to seek out professional help. When it comes to a professional recovery center, you have two options: outpatient and inpatient rehab.

If you’ve already been looking into treatment options, you may have come across these terms already but may not know exactly what they mean. Let’s take a closer look at each to get a better understanding.

Inpatient and Outpatient Rehab Options

To put it simply, inpatient rehab is a treatment program you enter and live in during your time in treatment. This is also referred to as a residential rehab or treatment option. On the other hand, outpatient rehab is one that you travel to while you are living at your home, apartment, or other place of residency.

While there can be pros and cons to attending both inpatient and outpatient rehab and you will need to do some serious research on your own before you decide what is best for your situation, we’re going to briefly go over some of the benefits of inpatient rehab and why you should consider this route when deciding on treatment for yourself or your loved one.

Pros of Inpatient Rehab

While there are pros and cons to both sides, let’s take a moment to just focus on some of the benefits that are associated with going to residential rehab.

24/7 Supervision

One benefit that should seem obvious when it comes to residential rehab is the supervision and attention that clients will receive while in an inpatient rehab setting. Because they are living in the facility, they will be monitored by addiction professionals and nursing staff during their time in rehab. This can be beneficial for a number of reasons.

For one, it allows them to reach out to someone when they are in a weak moment and feel strong urges to use again. Getting professional assistance during these moments will make a huge difference when they are on their own. It is also worth noting that this type of supervision can keep them safe in other ways. For instance, they will be safe from abusive relationships or friends and can also be safe from themselves if they are dealing with thoughts of self-harm or suicidal ideation.

Allows The Option to Get Away

For those who do choose an inpatient rehab, they have the option to go elsewhere for their treatment rather than being locked down in their hometown for recovery. For some going out of town may not be the best option, but for others, getting away can help them deal with the initial stresses of early sobriety.

Many times, people can feel the urges and cravings to use and turn right back to their substances, but if they are not in a familiar location they won’t know where to go or where to turn to in order to get those substances. In these cases, being in unfamiliar territory can be helpful.

More Intensive Care

People who are in inpatient rehab will likely be receiving more intensive and comprehensive care than those who are in n outpatient facility. Not only will their days be filled with a mix of personal reflective time and various treatment options, but the treatment options that are offered at residential recovery centers will also likely be more eclectic than those that are at an outpatient program.

Inpatient rehab clients will not only get the basic therapeutic and holistic options, but they will also often have experiential therapy options as well. Things like eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing, biofeedback, and even equine therapy can be commonplace in some treatment programs.

These are just some of the many benefits associated with inpatient rehab. If your loved one is dealing with addiction, take the time to learn what works best for that specific situation.
