I wrote this story hoping that others finally can see their potential and how drugs affect them. Our past does not define our future if we want to do better.

I've never personally experienced drug addiction, although have lost family members to drugs and alcohol. Do not become another statistic when help is out there. You are so much better than addiction.

• Heroin is listed as a Schedule 1 narcotic in the U.S. It is a highly addictive opioid with a long history in the U.S.

• About 75% of heroin users said they first misused prescription opioids

Drug overdose is the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States, according to data from the CDC. About 68% of those deaths involved prescription opioids. There’s been a 147% increase in illicit opioid drug use since 2007 according to the United Nations World Drug Report.
