Shams Ul QammarPublished about a year ago in PsycheWhat Business Can Learn From the Courts in Combatting Unconscious Bias
Unconscious bias is a term that has an increasing presence in conversations of diversity and inclusion. In simplest terms, unconscious bias refers to biases an individual holds that they are not typically aware of, hence the designation of “unconscious.” Remember, unconscious bias is a universal issue! “Results of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) taken by millions of people show that 75 [%] of test-takers have a pro-white bias,” for example. In other words, we aren’t navigating these challenges alone. But because so many of us don’t realize we have these biases, unconscious bias can tremendously impact the ways in which we navigate society. Sometimes, these situations may be life or death. Consider: unconscious bias in the courtroom, particularly amongst juries.

The Schizophrenic MomPublished about a year ago in PsycheHawaiian Dracula
The shadowy figure lived high upon the illusive mountain surrounded by a inactive volcano inside the buried temple on what is now called the Pacific Islands. Hawaiian music of soft ukuleles played by gypsies on the black sand as native girls danced in grass hula skirts under a sinking red sun. The dark magic that surrounded the area attracted distant souls who wandered through the grassy forest late at night. The shadowy figure turned within the thick mountain fog revealing a dark velvety cape, dark flowing hair & ruby jewelry that glowed in the moonlight matching his red somber eyes. Breathing in the cool air he felt inner content as the landscape had a peaceful atmosphere allowing him to live as he chose. The wondering native girls sensed he was there, moving as if in a trance through the fog like ships gliding at sea. He watched them from a distance, tasting his lips of their sweet blood, ready to turn ever so slowly into a bat. His squeaky shrill disrupting the nesting birds as he, the one named Dracula made his first bite. Taking her down to his liar he rested his victim gently in a empty coffin after draining her blood, filling his thirst. Their were about ten victims all together as they would sleep with the rising sun, becoming vampires from his spell. The chamber of underground burning torches led extensively through deep tunnels dug by ancient islanders. He taught all his victims in nightly rituals how to feed on victims reviving their strength that would keep them alive for centuries. He dressed them in sheer gowns of elegant taste, bringing them necklaces of garlic & jewels he adorned each one with while some wore crowns. They didn’t mind the transformation , as his Harem of women grew fangs that lusted for his touch. At dawn the spell was deep as they wondered out to the sea to bathe under the rays of moonlight. Off in the distance drums beat out a rhythm as Toltec idols stood guard looking like a wooden version of Easter Island. Pirates plundered the untouched land where a sweet vampiress kiss brought them a fresh loot of treasures turning their ships into piles of skulls. As they danced each night on a seashelled beach to the musical performance a strange sight took place. A eerie sort of haunted ship appeared a with ghost like mast and jolly Rodger. Standing up high in the crow’s nest was a dreadful sight. Dracula could see through his opera glasses he had looted what looked like part man, part fish. His soulmates in turn gazed through the glasses, exclaiming that they were of the Octopus people. Their green tentacle faces dressed in Victorian attire, looking tense & strained. The peaceful water began to churn from a storm that the threatening ship seemed to bring. They waited until sunrise watching the ship as it had a harpoon on deck that indicated they were whalers. As the sun squinted through the storm clouds, the small group of watchers made their retire down into their temples to sleep until dusk. The wind howled as rain pounded the chamber doors while strange whale moans were heard. It didn’t really seem like Hawaii after their arrival. The Paradise that was theirs seemed to become a world of storms. Dracula assembled his small group of vampires & made a plan on what to do. On top of the mountain was placed a cannon where volcanic fireballs were made from coconuts. Once fired at the predatory ship it would burn leaving the pirates to swim to shore. Then his thirst driven females would dip arrows in the lava to drive into the invaders as they made way for the beach. As the storm passed, they waited till dusk to attack. Fortunately the moon was full, allowing them a clear view of the distant vessel. Dracula fired the cannon with the fiery thrust looking like a bright comet flying through the air. The ship caught ablaze as planned while he watched from his perch the delight of the performance. The woman all dressed in white moving in with their arrows dipped into the smithy of the volcanic flames. The alien sailors were swimming to the shore, gasping for air, only to be victimized by vamps of the night. Each struck by an arrow became bewildered at the attack, dying from the scorching fire with a stunned gaze in their eyes. It was a beautiful moment for Dracula as he transformed into his bat form and flew down to the beach. They made a bonfire to celebrate their defeat. The following day the storms were no more, the vampires slept sensing nothing was wrong. They hadn’t counted how many men were on the ship, not knowing their Captain had escaped by clinging to a rock while watching the massacre. He waited until the bonfire had gone out with the morning sunrise. He watched them ascend to their hidden fortress and followed. He knew they were Vampires who needed sleep in their coffins, as he tied together two driftwood sticks to make a crucifix, he made the descend into the pit. Finding a inner maze of corridors that wound into different rooms, he was amazed at what he saw. Giant glass cases stood holding preserved vampire corpses, all of them women. Cobwebs filtered through the dusty cave walls leading to a inner chamber where they slept together, some in coffins, some on satin covered beds. Their was a giant mirror surrounded with candles that he gazed in, only to see his hideous green reflection. The alien sea Captain knew he was unattractive, yet he was grateful he wasn’t a Vampire. If only he could bring the sun into the dwelling. He thought about stabbing them through the heart, deciding to take his revenge another way. He found on a mirrored dresser many jewels that he stuffed into his pockets. Pearls from the sea would be worth a fortune on his planet. Heading outside he singled a distress call with his communication device, allowing a craft to make a rescue. The olive green amphibious craft hovered above with two armed soldiers floating down inside a filmy bubble armed with laser weapons. The Captain told of how they had destroyed his crew & ship, describing Vampires responsible for the demise. Finding the cannon at the hilltop, then leading them to their encampment. The ground soldiers looking like Klingons with squid like faces descended down to have a look at the cave, their weapons set on kill. The candle lit room with the display of mummified Vampires startled them, as the found the sleeping bodies with a essence of garlic filtering the smug enclosure. Finding the coffin with the Count, the three extraterrestrials studied his features of red lips sleeping in the velvet lined coffin. He sat up from his sleep, his dark eyes staring at the three invaders. Transforming into a large bat, screeching in dismay, he confused the Octi men. The women woke up and scrambled through the tunnels with the green men following. They ran out into the moonlight where the orb from the craft was waiting among the blowing palm trees. The jungle became alive with terrifying screams from the exotic birds, while the Vampires ran toward the beach. The sea captain grabbed one of the women and threw her into the floating sphere. Up she went into the hovering craft. They had taken her for Their prize. Four more orbs floated down with the Octi men ascending, as the Count in his bat form flapped his wings watching in distress. As the craft vanished into the night, the moon suddenly eclipsed behind the earth making it pitch black. The Volcano then reacted in a strange way by erupting in the darkness spewing thick smoke and hot fire. A fire that matched the Counts rage as one of his bewitched daughters of the night had been stolen. He watched with his red beady eyes as the entire island would explode. Their was no need to transform back into his human form, the island being eaten with moving lava. There was only one thing to do, fly over the sea to find a new home.. Days became weeks as he flew over the sea, resting on small boats until finding a larger vessel. And then, he saw the alien craft in the sky that had taken his possession. It released another bubble, where he saw her for a moment, and then she transformed not into a animal, but into the wind itself. The sorcerers of the sky had changed her into a tornado, as they were obsessed with weather mutations. He watched her body whirl & twirl picking up water as if drinking from the sea. He knew then he could never have her back, as he needed to find a dark place to sleep being a stowaway on a ship headed for America. There, he would have to make a new life, as his existence in Paradise had ended tragically.
