Beyond the Ordinary: Why Your Home Bar Needs a Spiced Banana Spirit
If you were to take a time machine back to the average home bar or neighborhood tavern in the late 1980s or 1990s, you would likely be greeted by a terrifyingly vibrant visual display. The liquor cabinets of that era were heavily populated by brightly colored, artificially flavored syrups that loudly masqueraded as premium spirits. There were neon blue curaçaos, radioactive green melon liqueurs, and alarmingly bright yellow banana schnapps. If you asked a bartender for a fruit-flavored cocktail during that specific decade, you were almost guaranteed to receive a beverage that was cloyingly sweet, visually shocking, and entirely disconnected from the actual agricultural product it claimed to represent on the label.

Saké, for goodness sake 7-22-2026
This column is intended as an introduction to Japanese “rice wine” anchored by Bōken No. 77 Junmai Ginjō Saké. Bōken No. 77 is worth seeking out. Bōken means “journey” or “adventure.” It shows a pale silver color and floral nose—honeysuckle, lemon aromas; then coconut, pear on the palate. Clean finish. Medium-plus body. It strongly leans toward sweetness, but it has excellent balancing acidity and fruitiness.

Distillate Podcast
Amid the maelstrom surrounding video podcasting, streaming podcasts, and celebrity podcasts, narrative podcasts have gotten less love than usual. Unlike today, when celebrity podcasts and interview shows roll off an assembly line, narrative podcasts were the Coin of the Realm in the early days of podcasting.

Classic Cocktail Corrections
I just read the worst butchering of classic cocktail recipes I’ve ever seen. In the event that you’ve read it and plan to blindly follow those recipes, I need to step in and stop you before every classic cocktail is corrupted. Allow me to establish my credentials: my first bartending gig was in 1993. Most of my F&B experience is waiting tables (I prefer it), but I know my way around a bar and returned to it roughly five years ago, to keep from getting rusty.

The Bottle I Was Afraid to Open
I am not a whiskey person. In fact, I’m barely an alcohol person at all. I might have a drink once or twice a year—usually at a wedding, a holiday dinner, or when someone insists I “at least try it.” Even then, I’m the person who nurses the same glass for an hour while everyone else orders a second round.
