Back in 2021, I wrote about my personal health journey through disability and the use of CBD, however, at that time, little or no research evidence was available during the relative infancy of CBD with regard to its benefits.

You can read this article that I wrote back on 11th May 2021 below:

More than a year after that article, there have been a few gains toward the benefits that have been investigated, and I wanted to share this with you today.

To start off with, in the United States, hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3% THC) are legal on the federal level but are still illegal under some state laws. However, under some state laws, CBD products (with less than 0.3% THC) are still illegal, according to Healthline.

CBD from 2018 passed legislation legalizing certain cannabinoid use in the United Kingdom (UK) Parliament. THC though is still considered to be a controlled substance and, therefore, not legal for public consumption.

❗ CBD oil must be sourced from hemp grown outside of the UK.

❗ CBD oil may contain no more than 1mg of THC per product or bottle.

⭐ Hemp was chosen for its high concentrations of CBD and very low amount of THC. Because the law mandates that no product can contain more than 1mg of THC per product, it was found that limiting CBD product production to hemp plants rather than the THC-rich marijuana (cannabis Sativa) plants would allow for the safe and legal sale of CBD products.

The Scotsman. 18th January 2022.

➡️ Reasoning behind why CBD oil must be sourced from hemp grown outside of the UK is due in part to cannabis (all genus and strains) having been made illegal in the UK, thereby hemp cultivation has seen a huge decline, as the crop has become increasingly controlled. Now, it is considered to not be financially viable by many British farmers anymore.️⬅️

The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has stated that whilst they have not approved any ‘over-the-counter’ (OTC) drugs containing CBD, and none of these products meet the requirements to be legally marketed without an approved new drug application. They explain that ‘CBD has known pharmacological effects on humans,’ though, despite warnings and continuing monitory over its application use of sale.

Antipsychotic effects. Studies suggest that CBD may help people with schizophrenia and other mental health conditions by reducing symptoms of psychosis.

Substance abuse treatment. CBD may be helpful for relieving anxiety and depression in people who have a dependence on certain drugs, including heroin.

Possible extension of life in those with glioblastoma. Recent studies suggest that treatment with a combination of CBD and THC may help extend the life of some people with an aggressive form of cancer called glioblastoma, yet research is limited.

Possible improvement in sleep. Some studies suggest that CBD might help improve sleep in people with certain sleep disorders, though more research is needed.

Healthline. CBD and its role in treating a number of health issues.

Research has linked CBD with several benefits for the heart and circulatory system, including the ability to lower high blood pressure. In a small study, 9 healthy men were treated with 600 mg of CBD oil. The CBD treatment reduced resting blood pressure compared with a placebo.

Researchers believe that CBD’s ability to act on the endocannabinoid system and other brain-signaling systems may provide benefits for those with neurological disorders.

For example, Sativex has been shown to be a safe and effective way to reduce muscle spasticity in people with Multiple Sclerosis.

Despite these having been simply ‘small studies,’ it certainly is beginning to show quite positive attributes at this stage. There is no doubt both in my mind and in the minds of the scientific communities that, much more research is needed to be carried out though.

CBD is simply another pharmacologically interesting chemical. It may turn out to be, in one form or another, a useful drug. There is preliminary evidence that it may be useful in treating anxiety and other mood disorders and have antiemetic properties. Actually, one form of CBD has been purified, studied, and FDA-approved as a prescription drug for certain kinds of epilepsy, such as Epidiolex.

… there is an FDA-approved form of CBD, which we cannot assume has identity risks of every herbal version out there but does give us some information on safety. As is almost always the case, any drug that is pharmacologically active enough to have a demonstrable benefit likely also has potential risks and interactions. CBD, it turns out, has a safety profile that is fairly typical for a prescription drug, and in fact, is worse than many drugs on the market.

Science-Based Medicine. How safe is CBD? Published 15th June 2022 by Novella, S.

Is CBD now beginning to change the face of mental health today?

Deemed safe by most experts, it is said to induce calm, boost mood, and relieve pain without the impairment or anxiety that THC can induce. But though CBD is showing real promise for treating conditions such as anxiety and addiction, researchers worry that false claims are flourishing, and far outstripping the ability of science to catch up.

Post-Traumatic Health Disorder (PTSD) is another major mental health disorder that has been under the umbrella of clinical trials since December 2019, and one which has since been updated on 6th October 2022, however, the full study completion is not yet expected to be published until May 2024.

The overarching objective of the proposed project is to test the clinical efficacy of CBD in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder using a rigorous double-blind randomized clinical trial methodology. Participants (n=150) meeting full DSM-5 criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD.)

We predict that patients receiving CBD isolate or CBD Broad Spectrum will show significantly greater improvements in PTSD symptoms and functional impairment at the posttreatment and one-month follow-up relative to patients receiving placebo oil. Additionally, we expect that patients receiving CBD Broad Spectrum will show significantly greater improvements relative to patients receiving CBD Isolate.

Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 264 million people around the world live with it. Today, research suggests that it has multiple health benefits. One of those benefits may be to reduce depression symptoms.

So, there you have it.

CBD (without the awful effects of THC) is growing in its positive evidence when it comes to medical research and practical use, and as time further goes on, I am certain that more positivity will grow exponentially toward its use in our world.

Hi Jonathan. I was born in the Caribbean and I grew up seeing this being used pretty openly. I noticed that back then people who used (smoked) it were calm and always smiling. They also lived a pretty long life, mostly. I hope you are doing better, There is something to be said for natural medicine. Many blessings on your journey.

  • This is very informative Jonathan. Thank you

  • This is very helpful information. I’m sorry you had to struggle to find it out, but it certainly could help someone else. I struggle terribly with insomnia, stress related. I may check into it. Thank you 😊
