Therapy Benefits of CBD use
Chronic Pain and Neuropathic Pain
After a Road Traffic Accident in 2017, I sustained injuries which at the time, I thought to myself, 'oh well it will go away in a few weeks, and I can get back to my normal work & life pattern.' It's now 2021 and over those years in between, the pain levels have simply intensified, to include mobility issues which, to this day, have never diminished. Earlier this year I gave up working as a mental health nurse after having contracted Covid-19 in 2021 and required intensive hospitalization & oxygen therapy. Prior to discharge, the hospital discharge planning team had adaptations made to my home to support me with my worsened mobility. 7 months after discharge I made attempts at phased returns to my hospital nursing post but after three attempts of trying to walk/run around the ward, provide personal care and necessary/proportionate/justified restraint, care-planned for safety, I found I was struggling and at times (at the end of the 12-hour shift) was experiencing severe problems with driving back from work to our home just a mere 17 miles away.
As part of my training knowledge needs for revalidation requirements for my NMC registration (due 3-yearly), I embarked on a home-based IT course concerning the upcoming therapy benefits of CBD oils. For which I was awarded a continuing professional development (CPD) at Higher Distinction. Despite discovering very limited data and research into CBD's effects, I came across interesting facts on the human body's Endocannabinoid System (ECS.) CB1 and CB2 receptors - the first being primarily located within the brain and nervous system, with the latter located within the peripheral organs particularly associated with the human body's immune system. A building body of research shows ECS does have a significant influence on human health & well-being, providing an essential function with restoring homeostasis (through physiological and regulatory mechanisms.)
At this stage, it is important to understand that CBD is not associated with the more illegal ramifications of pure cannabis (which is a class B status as defined by the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.) Primarily due to the high levels of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in unscreened use. CBD on the other hand as sold legally in the UK has a very reduced content level of between 0.2% - 0.3% in doses sold within UK sales areas. THC being the prime cause for the far more dangerous effects of Cannabis (such as pyschoactive effects.) CBD oils, gummies, tinctures, and bath balls, all available within the UK for personal therapeutic use. Despite the licensed use by certain UK doctors for a cannabis prescription only in use for pain or inflammation, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, or weight loss , tingling or numbness from nerve damage , mood and sleep problems , muscle spasms, tremors (shaking), seizures, or tics , and fluid pressure in the eye from glaucoma - it is important to note here that the medical prescription use, is very highly monitored. For the purposes of this though, going forward, the use of CBD I have found, provides highly beneficial qualities in managing my ongoing severe pain, allowing me to go about some daily activities more fluidly.
I cannot truthfully say that CBD is a fantastic use to cure all but, that it helps me manage day-to-day. My wife and now registered carer is the major influence in getting through each day and, without her, it would potentially be a very different outcome. I certainly do miss working in the hospital but, now am trying to rebuild life with my wife's support through writing articles, stories and enjoying life outside work; beginning to enjoy the beauty around me. Living by the sea also enables me to understand how lucky I am after contracting Covid-19.
