You Have My Gratitude

Was it my heart you broke or my ego?

After the terrible week I’ve had this week

I decided to concentrate on my gratitude,

And it got me seriously thinking of you

The guys I have loved with any magnitude.

***

The bulk of you only lasted a few months

Or for some maybe even a year or two,

When we break, I’ve often wondered

Was it my heart you broke or my ego too?

***

I start to question, did I actually love you

And I can quickly answer yes it was true,

It hurt immensely when we did finally part

And for a short period I was feeling blue.

***

Delving deeper, I realised it was never our love

That I was often searching high and low for,

It was never that earth shattering, deep seated

Powerful heart stopping love, that I adore.

***

So for you I share my deepest gratitude

You saved me from a dissatisfied love affair,

We were one that didn’t sustain us for long

Leaving me free to find love elsewhere.

***

I’m grateful for the lessons you taught me

Especially the one where I knew to hold out,

Stay single, until that one special Soul

Buries so deep in my heart there’s no doubt.

***

So to all those guys who up and left me

Please know I’m so very grateful to you,

Each of you were but a stepping stone

To the one I’ll love the rest of my days through.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
