Welcome to burn out culture

The so-called generation lazy

We "tanked" the diamond economy

As far as the generations before us could see

Welcome to burn out culture

Where we hold a job two or three

But we still have insufficient money

And home ownership is beyond our ability

Welcome to burn out culture

Where your mental health doesn’t matter

Where you must juggle work, home, family

Because you’re from a generation lazy

Welcome to burn out culture

The root of your problems is avocado toast

From wanting Deep Roast

From wanting to travel coast to coast

Welcome to burn out culture

Where you’re tired, underpaid, overwhelmed

Where you’re not even close to your sixties

But you’d feel that you have labored for centuries

Welcome to burn out culture

Of course, you can’t leave!

But you can try and become a business owner

You just have to work thrice harder

Oh, welcome to Burn Out Culture!

You are the problem

You are the issue

But never, ever, the culture

Note from me:

Hi! Thank you for reading!

This poem is inspired by the articles (and podcasts/videos) that are still going around about Millennials and Gen-Zers. Each generation has its struggles, and unfortunately, the blame game is still occurring rather than addressing and fixing the issues that we all are facing.

Agree totally. I grew up as the New Deal was getting implemented and have watched with anger as it was subsequently dismantled bit by bit. After Eisenhower, it all went downhill, slowly building momentum until we have what your work describes..

This! In medicine, burn out is prevalent but instead of examining the reasons as to why: poor staffing, difficult to attain metrics, and the Almighty patient satisfaction, burn out is blamed on the clinician. We're not tough enough, we're spoiled, we expect too much. But avocado toast would help a little bit! Love this work, bestie!

An excellent piece! They've changed your playing field but expect the same game! Keep writing and you WILL be heard!

This really sums it up. A lot of anguish stems from high standards with low payout. Can you tell me what you meant by avocado toast?

    Good work

I so agree. What have we done as a population to ourselves? We should have seen it coming. Financial Slavery-the way they want us and mental madness the way we're going.

Awesome flow and I definitely felt the emotion!!

Great poem! I felt the heart behind it, how it tensed with sadness. It really feels like we are all running up a hill that keeps getting steeper, and those already at the top don't see it.

This was beautiful. Depressing and true and yet very well written. You really captured the heart of this culture.
