The Plague Top Story - June 2023
After a night of thin sleep, I rose from my bed, joints aching and body weary. Lack of rest or something else? Gently, I probed my neck and underneath my arms. No swelling. Reassuring but it could mean I hadn’t progressed to that symptom yet. I took stock. No aching skull, no bone-rattling chills. I swallowed. No sore throat. Surely, nothing more than poor sleep.

“Buy you a drink?” Your eyes met mine, lips curved into a smile. You nodded. Coke for me, IPA for you. Plus, something extra that soon slurred your words. I poured you into my backseat and your shirt rode up, revealing pink flank—sooooo enticing. My heartrate spiked.

Goodbye
Mourners clad in black stood near the plot; eyes cast downward. A dour priest intoned meaningless words, unheard platitudes. Your casket—gleaming mahogany topped with blood red roses, still above ground—beckoned me. What was life without you? Nothing. With a creak, they lowered you into the pit. “Ashes to ashes, dust to dust” and my fist unclenched, a handful of graveyard dirt pattering atop your final resting place.
