Wandering Roots
A poem about making peace with your wanderlust and from where you were raised
“Bloom where you’re planted,” so the saying goes...
But, sometimes your roots turn into your foes
When you crave the wind more than the ground
You shake up the soil, you come unbound
And off you ‘grow,’ leaving your traces
The wind always carrying you to far off places
You bravely go further than the branches before
But deep in your pith, there is always a war
You’re not who you were, you’re not who you are
Sometimes too close, sometimes too far
You return to the mound, where as a sapling grew
The truths unearth, some you always knew
You wish things were different, you wish things had changed
Each time you return, you feel more estranged
They say you’re ‘different’...you tell them they’re right
Some judge your choices, some praise your light
To become who you want, to choose where to grow
The ones who truly love you will always show
You’ll find peace in the stories of how you branched off your tree
When you can visit ‘the roots,’ and just let it all be
🌳
...I’ve lived in 7 cities so far, have always been a traveler, and was raised Memphis, TN. I wrote this on my more recent visit there, full of newfound peace about it all. Hope it resonates.
