Author's Note: Thank you for reading! I have included a link to the song that was playing when I wrote this poem. I hope you enjoy both! 🖤🖤

🎵

Sleep calls to me, begging for an answer.

I resist its soft temptation a little while longer.

The sweet serenade keeps my hips swaying,

And I keep writing until the Jazz stops playing.

My heart is lifted, my head no longer hanging low -

"Just one more song," I think as the words still flow.

Words fill the pages without stagnation -

No longer blocked by my own imagination.

My toe taps along with the skillful percussion,

As the piano and strings join in the session.

My hips sway as the tempo brightens my mood,

And the air around me seems to flow like fluid.

Though no lyrics join in this symphony -

My fingers write the words in harmony,

Anticipating the thoughts of the musicians.

Their rhythm inspires the latest of my compositions.

New words, new rhymes to my mind are called,

By this dark and lyrical night, I am enthralled.

This sultry night of rhythm and temptation -

This soft night filled with soulful remediation.

My heart is lifted, my head no longer hanging low-

"Just one more song," I think as the words still flow.

Sleep calls to me, begging for an answer.

I resist its soft temptation a little while longer.

The sweet serenade keeps my hips swaying,

And I keep writing until the Jazz stops playing.

OMG. Funny how this is one of your pinned stories. Art Blakey has been such an influence to me as a drummer! And 'Moanin' is one of the best known jazz records in the ever-growing catalog of the art form. This was the perfect song to express reluctance to the pillow. Haha! Great read. "This sultry night of rhythm and temptation-"--really enjoyed that moment.
