"She spoke so well of him, as if he walked on water-"
"What else can you expect? She is her father's only daughter..."
"And now thorn in his side."
"Or maybe a missing jewel in the crown?"
"He can't say it was unexpected, that apple fell straight down."
"Oh yes, all the way to the twisted roots, I hear, and now she's on the war path."
"I heard she sent a letter-"
"A letter?"
"That's right, seven pages long, and told him if he kept this woman in her mothers home..."
"In the house?"
"Oh yes, if he kept this woman in the house, she said, then she'd ruin them all."
"Did she? Ruin them?"
"Well, she sings in a dance hall now..."
"Not quite salted earth."
"Depends on how you look at it; I heard she has plenty of new friends call nightly.... but you didn't hear it from me."
"No, of course not."
"More tea?"
