To Our Unborn Grandson

We wait and we wait.

We all anticipate

What is soon to be a miracle.

The day you will come into

Our world and our lives,

Your “birth” day.

Who will you look like? we wonder.

Daddy? Mommy?

Maybe a combination of both?

Will you be long or shorter?

Will you be a big boy,

Or more slight?

Will your eyes be blue

Or another hue?

Will you have hair, or none for now?

It will not matter.

Not a single bit

Because

To all of us waiting,

You will be perfect

No matter what!

You are so wanted,

So loved.

Your parents will love you,

The way parents do.

You won’t always understand

Their reasons,

But you will know that they will

Champion for you, always.

They will be your protectors.

They will be your comfort and your secure place.

The love of aunts and uncles and cousins

Is going to be the fun love!

The sleepovers, the movies and ice cream.

Maybe a bedtime story now and then.

Games played, adventures to playgrounds,

To the beach on a hot summer’s day.

But a grandparent’s love is a precious love

That is hard to explain, but so easy to show.

Your grandparents are going to be those people

Who will always have room for you;

Room in their homes and room in their hearts.

The things we do are going to be

Things we did with your parents when they

Were little like you, because it is what we remember,

Because it that is what is going to make us happy.

Our stories might be different,

So might our games.

We will teach you about how things were in days gone by,

When we were small; things we learned from our grandparents.

Our love for you will be different because

Our love will be not only our love for you

But it will be our love for your Mommy and Daddy,

Our love for ourselves, and

Our love for all of those who came before us

All those who have had a small little part

In making you, who you are

And who you will be.

We want to make memories for you.

Memories that you will only make with us,

With your grandparents.

We will want you to look forward to

Coming to visit us,

To smile and giggle when you think of us,

And to squeal with delight when you come

Bounding in our door

Or you see us walking up to your house.

We have been waiting and wanting you

For a very long time now

And we are down to counting the days

Until you arrive.

How excited we will be when we finally get

To see and hold you.

Until that day, precious one,

We wait, we wait.

And we anticipate.
