The Song of Tragedy

Goddess Athena/Minerva | Patron of wisdom, war, and handicraft

God Poseidon/Neptune | Patron of the sea and waters, as well as of horses and earthquakes

Perseus, the son of the Greek God Zeus | The slayer of the Gorgon Medusa and the rescuer of Andromeda from a sea monster.

Medusa Origin Lore | The High Priestess of Athena, cursed as a Gorgon

May the Gods bring you fortune

And better blessings than I received.

I served the temple for years.

Sold my soul for praises from She.

But Her love could not protect me,

And violated I must be

By the God of the Sea

Who claimed power over me.

Dear Athena,

I plea.

Your wisdom is beyond me.

I know you can see.

That I will never commit such blasphemy!

I hope my prayers never fell on deaf ears

As I sought refuge in these caverns.

My heart aches with fear

And betrayal overcomes me.

Dear Athena,

Hear my pleas!

I didn’t commit such blasphemies.

I’ve only loved She,

But my faith could not protect me.

For centuries I questioned you,

As I sat here in my caverns,

But now I understood what you must do,

No man could no longer touch me.

Athena, please hear me.

I would never commit such sins.

I only honoured you.

So please forgive me.

I thought I was safe.

I grew confident in my cave.

But when the great Hero Perseus pursued me,

I knew that the Gods have forsaken me.

Dear Athena, please help me!

I never meant to offend thee.

With all your wisdom I seek counsel.

With all my heart I scream,

Please protect me!

Hi, I'm CyCy!

Thank you for reading. I truly appreciate it!

This poem, like the others, came as a musical score in my dreams. Maybe one day, I will have enough to compile into a book.

Who is Medusa?

Medusa was the High Priestess of Athena. She was known for her beauty.

There are many variations of her origin lore. Some say that she had angered the Goddess by seducing and romancing the God of the Sea, Poseidon, in Her temple.

And in some stories, Poseidon assaulted Medusa in Her temple. Both variations led to Medusa being cursed as a Gorgon, so no man could ever look at her again.

What is a Gorgon?

It is a Greek mythological creature that had snakes for hair. Making direct eye contact with one would turn you into stone. According to the myth, they are horrifying and venomous.

Along with Medusa, the two other known Gorgons are Stheno and Euryale.

Perseus, the son of the Greek God Zeus

According to Greek Mythology, Perseus was known as the Great Hero who beheaded Medusa.

Armed with all the necessary artifacts, Perseus adorned himself with the bag (kibisis), secured the sandals (Hermes' gift) around his ankles, and placed the cap (Athena's gift) upon his head.

Donning the cap, he gained the ability to observe anyone while remaining invisible to others. Additionally, Hermes bestowed upon him an unbreakable sickle, and with it, Perseus took flight toward the vast ocean, where he discovered the slumbering Gorgons.

With caution, he approached Medusa, the mortal among the three sisters, while keeping a vigilant eye on the reflection of the monstrous creature in Athena's gleaming bronze shield. Guided by the Goddess Herself, Perseus raised the sickle and severed Medusa's head.

To his amazement, a golden-sworded warrior and a winged horse (Medusa's unborn children, conceived during her time as a beautiful mortal when she had an affair with the Sea God Poseidon) sprang from her severed neck.

Aware of the power still held within Medusa's head, Perseus stored it away in kibisis. Then, by utilizing his winged sandals, he swiftly evaded the wrathful golden-winged Gorgons, who reluctantly returned to their lair to mourn the loss of their sister.

To capture the essence of their lament, Athena devised the music of the double pipe, known as the aulos.

In conclusion, Medusa's lore is a tragedy and our takeaway from this lore:

Getting involved with the Deities can cause your grievance, or you may receive exceptional blessings.

Either way, proceed with caution.

P.S. Don't worry. I will always try to remind you. 🍀
