The Smile He Gave Her

A Stream of Consciousness

By Abbey Published 3 years ago 1 min read

Maybe it was a beautiful thing

that she felt unloved.

How was it possible that she felt on top of the world

but also like she was drowning?

She was always patiently awaiting the unexpected

it was the only thing that made her feel fulfilled.

Unfortunately

the downfall swam right past her

when the only time she ever let herself

feel beautiful

was when she was wearing the smile he gave her.

She would ride these waves

of insecurity and unfulfillment

the most when she was alone.

It was at those times that she would drown

and lose herself the most,

and in a few moments

her shiny bubble of “jois-de-vivre”

that lit up her whole world would collapse.

These waves then led to the fall

of her favourite concept;

She told herself that

perhaps

it was the kind of love

that only existed

in the beauty

of the moments

that they had spent together.

It might not have been the first time

she had ever felt unloved,

but her heart

did break the most for him.

Because as she would come to learn,

she could not conjure him

to grant her

the kind of love that she

so desperately desired.

It was the aftermath

of their cyclonic depart

that taught her

it wasn’t him who was meant to rebuild her;

But, that he was her

wake

up

call

to finally

swim to her island of love that always existed within, and floated around her.
