The Silent Dinosaur

A Poem

The toy dinosaur on your bedside table hasn't roared in years;

The batteries inside of it died a long time ago.

But it was silent long before the batteries lost their juice.

It used to be the loudest creature in the house, letting loose at the most inopportune times.

It would unleash its wrath when I would stumble on it walking to the bathroom in the dead of night, loud enough to awaken the heaviest of sleepers.

It would sound during homework sessions when you would bang it against my bedroom door.

It would call out at the breakfast table when I was still wiping the sleep from my eyes.

And day after day, I would pray for its silence.

Until the day it stopped roaring.

And I stopped tripping over it in the darkness;

Stopped hearing it begging entry into my room;

Stopped hearing its cries of hunger at breakfast.

Now it just sits on your bedside table, in silence.

And somehow, that's much louder than its roar ever was.

  • I can’t explain why I had this feeling throughout your poem that this was a dead child’s toy… 😓 I like that you have left the ending so open to individual interpretation 💎👌 Well done 👏
