The Legacy of Sound

An acrostic poem

Deciduous are the spirits here--

Illuminated are their crowns against the sky,

Singing among adumbrations of the forest, (I’m)

Transcended by the ambiance of time. The

Raillery of hearts and gentle giants blossoms lilies--starry gardens efflorescing crystal chandeliers, and

Amaranthine are all the echos of their voices:

Can there be a sound without the seashells of our ears? (I wonder, for)

Thunderstorms--for centuries--carved and etched their stories

Into the molecules of flora and the ground..(then to)

Other worlds--those atoms lulled the fauna--(and because we’re somehow all connected…) twins of those same

Nebulas now blossom deep within us and our sleeping minds reach clouds--for the entire forest is alive today with lullaby: the legacy of sound.

Author's Note: I had such a vision for this poem, and I really hope I pulled it off here. 🥲 At the risk of being completely unconventional (yet again😅) with both my poetry and an author's note, I wanted to take a minute to explain where my mind was at for this.

I was inspired by the idea that the patterns of the billions of networks of nerves deep within our bodies resemble those of the galaxies way above us: both full of nebulas, fiery energy, and starry "neciceptor" endings.

Trees have always been facsinating to me, and I very much believe they are spirits among us. I feel at peace between them (serenely distracted from the normal chaos of my life, that is), and I wanted to tie this feeling together with the idea that we - as humans - are connected on a molecular level to not only all living creatures - but to all sources of universal energy as well.

It was a pretty big idea to fit into the small size of the acrostic, but I think I'm happy with how it turned out. 🤗

✨If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around, do you believe it makes a sound? ✨

Glossary:

Here are the definitions of some of the words, which have been borrowed from the Oxford Languages, Dictionary.com, and Merriam-Webster Online Dictionaries.

di-ˈsi-jə-wəs

(of a tree or shrub) shedding its leaves annually

raillery noun

ˈrā-lə-rē

good-natured ridicule

amaranthine adjective

am-uh-RANTH-un

You absolutely succeeded in your vision! And what a fantastic resource for several new words; I see amaranthine is here, as you said. What a wonderful wonderful read, Gina. I adore your notion of connecting trees to spirits, and the great cosmic landscape to our very nerves. What gorgeous representation of those concepts, so lovely, and sweeping. 💗

Absolutely gorgeous imagery. And I've always been fascinated with the idea that everything is in some way connected. Your language in this was on point as usual, but I loved this line so much, 'Nebulas now blossom deep within us'. Always such a joy to read your work, my friend :)

All of below and all of above (there will be more comments eventually, mark my words) is true. I love your writing, you know that. It would be hard to pick a favourite at this point, but I believe you keep outdoing yourself. Especially since you divided your poetic efforts into two different categories, it's been awesome seeing you grow creatively and get even bolder than you already were haha! Well done on another fine entry and another fine piece of art, Gina!

  • Some wonderful words here, possibly another Top Story

  • Can there be a sound without the seashell of our ears. That's my favorite line! Also, I love your idea of how our network of nerves resemble the galaxies and I too believe that we are all interconnected with everything. I'm at awe because you managed to fit this HUGE idea into just 11 lines. You nailed it perfectly! I'm so in love with your poem!

Magnificent poem Gina. I’m trying to decide is your DNA elven or fairy. It has to be or the other or a combination of both. You nailed this one. 🥰💜❤️

Where do you come up with such magic every time? You're a poet's poet, my friend.

  • Dana Stewart11 months ago

You’re beautiful creative mind! This is stunning, Gina. I am fascinated with trees too and the tree of the universe (mentioned in Marvel’s Thor :) is exactly what I pictured as I read. The way you weave the poetry into a tapestry is such a talent. Thank you for sharing!
