The dragon in me

The dragon in me stands at the door guarding what's inside

Fire breathes from a healing heart locked away deep inside

Footsteps sound along the floor, pacing with every regard

The castle stands cold and silent in the coming wind

~

The dragon in me passes from window to window

Remembering the way at times the world had a glow

So bright the sky beyond the horizon lit with its light

Before the princess was taken by the hero knight

~

The dragon in me relives the despair of every battle fought

Searching for the reason why the love, protected was lost

Why her caring eyes never looked back from the knight's horse

Water moves deep and dark in the moat's course

~

The dragon in me guards the love of another princess

A Sentry standing watch in stone rooms and hidden recesses

From high towers along castle walls, with eyes that search

The road outside the castle gates, for another hero knight's approach

~

She picks up her heavy sword before her eyes look at the dragon in me

The weight of her hand rests on my chest before she says, I need to believe

She whispers a kiss that tells me, I am not her protector, she is mine

The drawbridge lowers along chains, in front of us, her hand inside mine

~

One princess gone Replaced by another The one that drew near Now is Your lover The one princess gone Left nought a look behind Surely she a treasure she'll never find The knight on his horse May have battled for nought For princesses choose their knights Before wars are ever fought Though free with Your wings To Your castle You're bound Yet a princess, a knight In love, You she found She dropped her armor As You did Your scales She dropped her blade As You did Your flame Hiding behind armor To protect You from life Shields You from love More so than strife

What a beautiful poem, although I have to agree with L.C., for a moment, I thought that she was going to kill the poor dragon! I'm glad that you went the other way with it. It made for a bittersweet poem about love lost and then found again. Well done, and congrats on the Top Story!
