The Bleed & The Smile
an ode to HBO's Succession
Sweep the pennies off the street tonight
to make way for the limousine
the gold, the fist, the knife between the teeth
the fool with doves in his sleeves——and the bleed
.
Shine at the tip of the top, a star, the foil
torn, the cap, the privilege lost
the blood roils, the heart dissolves
when trust breaks beneath the weight——of resolve
.
Each mind conspires for the crown
the bid—to grant the wish—of a child
the bare handshake with an open wire
the dagger buried in the door—— and the smile
.
Each fallen heirloom finds the gutter
to gather together they’re gutted
the bill comes due, the fingers fumble
the ring in the crowd——of nothing
.
A foreign house stakes its sword at the gate
and steals the shiv——with a grin

Before the last 6 months, I hadn’t written anything that wasn’t for my job or university for a number of years. I wanted to write more, I used to write all the time just for fun. I used to write poems and short stories that were just for me. I used to show them to certain members of my family but it was the process of writing them that I really enjoyed.
