I pee on a stick

The clock starts to tick

My world is flipped

But the band starts to play

New life made of clay

Loud cheers and, hooray!

To the strength I'll display

Unsteady and uncertain

Uneasy and unclear

Nine months, maybe ten

Try to hide all the fears

Of failure and the tears

But the band plays louder

What strength, what courage

"A hero! We couldn't be prouder!"

Words to encourage

What to expect

When you're expecting

Does no justice to

The reality

Passive glances

Broken water

Just a vessel

Time to meet my daughter

A time meant to be so special

The day has come

The deed is done

The pain, tiresome

A babe rests on my bosom

The band exits.

Silence.

Alone.

Whimpering and cold

Picking up the pieces left of me.

Stay strong for the little one.

I'm not okay.

Lie on the doctor survey.

No one sees me anyway.

I'm not okay.

Burdens heavily weigh

New roles to play

An identity lost.

I'm not okay.

No one hears me anyway.

Silence.

Stay strong.

For the little one.

Put on a smile.

Only lasts a while.

Alone in exile.

Then. You smile.

Big and Full.

A smile, I return.

Stay strong.

For the little one.

So beautiful. All the love, doubt, and joy mixed in with the special moment when you become a parent. Thank you for sharing :)

  • Excellent. This spoke to me. I can hear my friends who have gone through pregnancy state this exact tale in their own words. Your poem retells the journey so sublimely. Beautiful.
