Tell us what he said

He said ‘You know I love you baby’

He said ‘Promise, I’ll pay you back’

He said ‘I know I can be selfish

But you can’t resist a man like that.’

*

He said ‘It’s not like I’m a rapist’

And I let the words hang in the air

I think, he had been drinking

I think, I didn’t dare.

*

It’s true that he was selfish

Because he didn’t pay me back

And though I think he might have loved me once

He shouldn’t have done a thing like that.

*

He said ‘I’ll never go back to prison’

But darling, I’m not sure that’s true

Because now I’ve told them what you’ve done

I plan to see it through.
