Swimming for Shore

a pantoum

I feel so beaten down.

I’m running out of air.

I’m trying not to drown,

But it’s more than I can bear.

I’m running out of air.

My lungs begin to ache.

It’s more than I can bear,

As new waves start to break.

My lungs begin to ache.

I know what I must choose.

As new waves start to break,

I’m determined not to lose.

I know what I must choose.

I’ll use the strength I’ve found.

I’m determined not to lose,

So I’ll swim for dry ground.

I’ll use the strength I’ve found

To somehow find the shore.

I’m swimming for dry ground,

Though I grow tired and sore.

I’ll somehow find the shore,

while trying not to drown.

And though I grow tired and sore,

I feel less beaten down.
