Sunshine

By: Sarah Holdsworth

By Sarah HoldsworthPublished 3 years ago 1 min read

Yellow rays of sunshine

The best part of any day

Is waking up cozy and warm

Feeling happy, refreshed, unafraid

Full of bravery and courage

Full of laughter and hope

All these wonderful things about yellow

They made me want to choke

My life was colorless

Another storm every day

The joy that came from sunshine

Lost in my sea of grey

All the pain and the hurt

Some things may make you cringe

Always trying to be my best

Not one step ahead, just one inch

I hated the person I was

So different than the rest

I tried to hide behind my mind

The weight heavy on my chest

My heart felt like

It has had all it can take

Trying to stitch myself together

Spinning sweet threads while hands shake

Blue is calm and blue is quiet

It makes the world feel at peace

To be lost in expansive waters

Causing all pain to cease

All of the terrible memories

They were treacherous and vast

All of the crippling hurt and trauma

Clinging to me from the past

How easy it could’ve been

To give in to those thoughts

But the more I thought about giving up

The harder my mother fought

She told me I was her sunshine

Though I never knew at the time

That the sun is bright behind those clouds

All I needed to do was to climb

Beyond those clouds of darkness

And beyond that sea of grey

She made me see blue was never my color

In the sunshine is where I’ll stay

It took me a long time to realize

What I was worth and from where I came

Because everyone has sunshine inside them

At the end of every day

It won’t always be easy my love

Sometimes it’ll seem so far away

But I promise that yellow will be waiting for you

When you live in happiness someday
