Summer in Australia

I hate it!

With the sun beating down, crisping my olive skin for endless days

I know summer in Australia is here again When seat belt buckles burn, and you cook eggs on the ground

And the rainbow haze of a mirage is not so exciting because it’s caused by heat and fumes

Your heartbeat pounds so loudly in your ears it’s all you can hear as

Your skin bubbles and blisters from heat

And you feel you almost match the scorched paddocks as bushfires run rampant

Living in the hottest state in the country

It’s like living in the fires of hell

It’s getting hotter every year and it’s no fun

I sit in front of fans, clothes soaked to the skin to cool down

Or rush to the abundance of shops

To find comfort from endless fiery heatwaves

When all you dream of is water - oceans, beaches, rivers and creeks, as you try to sleep

You drink water and Coke by the litre and zooper doopers become a staple

And you find reasons to not be home as the sweat trickles down your back

The sounds of sprinklers watering parched lawns and children playing under them

Bring nostalgia of days long past when I was young and the days not so hot

And summer was something I looked forward too!

About the Creator

Linda Bromley

Just one of many creative outlets for me has been books! My whole life I’ve loved them and it’s so easy to make the jump to writing.

Recently I completed a poetry challenge and now, looking for more excuses to write, I’ve found myself here!
