She Survived Your Destruction

Leaving you begging on your knees

Tears fall from her doe-like eyes as she watches in sadness,

Her heart tearing itself ragged against her chest bone,

Devastation like she’s never known, not in her lifetime,

Draining the excitement from her future, leaving a dull monotone.

***

You set your sights on her total destruction,

Holding tight to the truth as only you know it to be,

You don’t believe in fairness, in empathetic reasoning,

Determined to destroy her and then walk away free.

***

She has you believing in your new found strength,

Bolstered your well-being until you are blinded by your pride,

The end is near, you treasure the heartlessness of it all,

While you undermine her pity as you cast her aside.

***

The intensity of your betrayal flourishes your love of drama,

Watching in stony silence as she sobs and bleeds,

Raw emotion, destructive agony, the depth of her misery,

Rewards you in your endeavour as a forbidden man of deeds.

***

Once you are certain she is broken beyond repair,

You swoop in with loving arms and a tender word,

Calming her fears, distracting her from the worst of her hysterics,

Passing off her pain as unnecessary and absurd.

***

You leave her confused and utterly bewildered,

Convincing her of her destiny into impeding insanity,

Manipulating her worries into the realms of her imagination,

Knowing she’s innocent, instead it reeks of your inhumanity.

***

She sleeps hoping the darkness will dissipate by morning,

And if not she begs for the end, the depth of endless sleep,

She gives up, her labouring strength has left her exhausted,

In the agony of your abandonment in which she’s left to weep.

***

She freely gives you her love, her total adoration,

Worships you in every way in an attempt to give you peace,

But you insist on self sabotaging your very existence,

Although you refuse to grant her a sacrificial release.

***

It’s only when you realise it’s all too little too late,

That you beg for forgiveness, a second chance,

Suddenly it’s you that’s living in a world of disbelief,

When you become the creature of circumstance.

***

Now you sit with your heart broken and your head hung in shame,

When she serves you her comeuppance, her brewing retaliation,

Politely served with a graceful smile and a twinkle in her eye,

And you realise you’re beaten, much to your frustration.

***

She insists you dine on her revenge until you’ve received your just desserts,

Promising she’ll disappear once you’re beaten black and blue,

Her darkness has mated with your retribution,

And she’s here to stay until she’s seen it through.

***

Beaten at your own game,

You were a master at the lessons you taught,

And she was a student of sheer perfection,

Excelling at the combatting destruction you wrought.

***

Near the very end of her harrowing retribution,

She feathers tiny kisses upon your distraught and downcast face,

Then turns and strides confidently through the door,

Satisfied she’s brought you to your knees, a well deserved disgrace.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
