A Majestic Bird Bathed In White

The luecistic Peacock

Surrounded by his white train he dances the tango,

His tail feathers shimmering like they are laced with dew drops,

He twirls to the left, then quickly reverses direction,

As he prances and struts his stuff.

***

His blue eyes gaze longingly upon his bride,

Hoping to catch her attention while she’s ready to mate,

As glorious and regal as he stands tall,

His lack of colour has him at an unfair disadvantage.

***

Mistaken as albino, when actually he’s luecistic,

A genetic mutation of his pigmentation,

As a result he works harder to attract his mate,

Strutting taller, dancing wilder, displaying his vanity.

***

Little skips and twirls, strong sidesteps and bows,

He prances tirelessly for her desire,

Convincing her of his right to claim majesty,

A desirable partner trait of her dreams.

***

He preens his magnificence in all his arrogance,

Fanning out his train to display his purity and cleanliness,

As clouds of white feathers blossom around him,

A trait of beauty amongst the most glamorous of birds.

***

Born yellow and thought of as the ugly duckling,

Until he matures into his pure white magnificence,

The King of the Peafowl looking for his regal Queen,

To sire the next generation of glorious perfection.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
